If you're taking a picture of something moving and use the flash, in first curtain sync the flash goes off at the start of the shutter opening. So if you're trying to capture the motion of the person moving, your person actually looks like they move the wrong way. Or if you're taking a photo of a car that is moving, in the photo the streaks of lights will be in front of the car. If you use rear curtain sync then it fires the flash at the end of the exposure. So it captures the streaks of light as the car drives by, then flashes and captures the car at the end. I don't imagine it would be often used except for maybe sports or things that you would need a long exposure for and it is important to show the proper motion in the photo. I think that's what your asking. Easiest to see in photo examples. There's a great book by amphoto which is just a basic photography guide but it has photos that show a lot of different things such as using telephoto to bring the background closer in perspective to the subject, and also, this rear curtain sync, it shows some good photo examples.
