ADVICE!!!! Shooting a MMA (in boxing ring) fight this weekend.... Can't Post

I posted this thread @ gary fong's photo site...
After being spotted by a fellow VU'er, I figured why not maybe Scott or someone else has someinsight on what will work best.

Thanks guys your all the greatest...Well except for Glen Elliot and Kent Rhodes, you guys are maybe 3rd place @ best :)

-chris
--------------------

So, I got confirmation to shoot press photos for 2 websites I admin/own for a Mixed Martial Arts(Ultimate Fighting) event in NJ this weekend. Euphoriamfc.com is their site.
My problem is, I have never done this type of thing before as I am more of a pro-am photog, candid shooter for my boss for wedding Photog. I am however I full time videographer.

ANYHOO, What advice can some of you give me to prepare for Saturday?

I know from being @ numerous fights that the ring side photo's never use flashes durring the actual fights. That is fine, when the winners pose after winning flashes can be used normally.

I have a pal of mine shooting still as well.
We figure shooting from opposite angles of the ring will get us a ton fo great photos.

I USE:
Canon Digi Rebel.
Vertical battery release
I have the Tamron 28-70mm 2.8 di x lens which i use for all my photo shoots for these girls for a website.
The 14 or 16mm? I forgot of the top of my head, Canon Fisheye Lens(cost 550usd).
The 580 ex flash WITH LS2, which I will indeed use for the show.
I also have the 1.8 Canon 50mm lens

My pal has the 1ds with 28-80 L canon plus 580ex.

I figure I'll bring my laptop, my 2.5 gig's of CF cards, Maybe steal another gig off my boss?
My laptop and upload pics as the cards get full underneath the ring by my feet.

ALSO what resolution SHOULD I shoot @.
The company doesn't "need" the full res, as the images will be used for magazine print and web photos. I may however blow up a few shots for a sick 16x20 collage for my room. When i do web photo work for my girls they site only needs the lowest res given by my rebel which is about 1500x1200 I'd say. So should I should 3kx2k? 2k x 1500?

ALSO!!!!!! What ISO speed should I set my camera to since, The fight will be lit up from stage lighting. The last show was in a different casino with only overhead lighting(think old school boxing fights), It has been told to me the lighting will be from the sides of the ring ala pro wrestling does nowadays as areference.

I MAY want to buy a new lens for the show although cash is tight due to car repairs last week

So realistically the Canon 10-22mm lens is out of the question @ 800 usd.

SO then I am looking @ the Tamron Or Sigma 17-35mm 2.8-4f lens?

Or am I THAT much better off paying for the Sigma 15-30mm?

I know it is alot of questions but I have a lot to learn from you guys and I look foward to hanging around here and picking up everything I can.

Thank you all in advance for you time to respond, it is GREATLY appreciated.

Chris how fast is the burst on the Rebel? I'm going to be shooting in burst mode on my 1DmkII but I have to be carefull I'll chew up even a 2gig card in minutes. I might actually shoot Medium, or Small...if it's just for the web (no print). I'm going to give the AI Servo Focus a shot- I've never used it before and am a bit concerned that it'll lock focus and track properly. It's supposed to be very responsive but I've never had any MOVING subjects to practice it on.

I'm probably just going to bring my 24-70 2.8L. If we are at ringside I don't think I'll need anything longer.

Do you have the link to the thread in that forum you posted this question at?

I can shoot 4 fps I THINK.

Im gonna go manual. Try my luck @ 1000asa to start.

Im going to shoot full res.

Im gonna bring 4 lenses.

my NEW Simga 17-35 2.8-4 lens(it will be here tomorrow, thank you Armatos:) )
Tamron 28-80 2.8 lens
Canon 1.8f 50mm lens
AND the Canon 15mm FISHEYE lens.

Also bringing the 580ex flash and the lightsphere.

I heard they have a ramp/entrance way with lighting so we may grab some good Jeremy Horn entrance shots with Pat and Matt walking down with him :)

Im bringing my laptop Glen, Also going to swipe 2 gigs of cards off the boss. So I figure durring the intermission etc.. We can download the pics and reuse the cards.

The more I think about shooting full res, the happier I am because Making a killer poster for my wall may happen :)

Hermes has a few injuries but still fighting, ligamints torn in right hand and bad left knee.

Having used AI Servo on the 20D a bit (I know its not the same), I'd suggest that you select ONLY ONE focus point so that the ring ropes don't cause your focus to shift off subject. I think for sports photos in general, the AI Servo and single point is optimal....

Enjoy, it sounds like great fun!

if you can rent one, get an 85f1.4 or 1.8 for ring side tight shots. send that crappy sigma 17-35 back and get the Tamron, or the sigma 18-50
2.8

Actually I have read and heard the Sigma is faster than the Tamron.
I was thinking of going for a longer lens but this sigma is flat out faster plus I have a great fast 28-70 Tamron :)

the tamron is the same speed, except it is a sharper lens from what I have read. I plan on selling my Nikon 18-35 for one as soon as it comes back from service.

HEY...that's everything on my list to buy! Accept the 50 1.8. I don't need it- my 24-70 covers that range (though not as fast...2.8).

I currently have a 24-70 2.8L, and 85 1.8. Next up is either the 16-35, 70-200 2.8L IS, or the 15mm Fish-eye!

The 50 1.8 is better than my 24-70 2.8L in its clarity, especially for dim-light applications. I'm sure you've read the forums on this. I seem to recall that you had similarly invested in quality glass.... but for $70, it is worth a try. Something about 50mm that makes it easy to manufacture, yet yields high quality results.

Also, the small size might be usefull to you at other times too.

I had the 50 1.8 for a little while- very good image quality for a cheap $65 lense. The problem is it WAS very very cheaply made. Plastic threads, usm motor that would litterally spin the focus dial...ugh! I guess for the price it's very good but not a match for the 24-70 imo. You have to stop the 1.8 down close to 2.8 to get sharp images anyway...plus look at the histograms- the 24-70 produces more contrast.

Tongue

\

I am giving the pics to the webmaster of Euphoria today, so the pics should be up in the next day or two. I will however post some more as Gunit and I shot almost 2000 pics of the night. TONS of great pics.

But here is the horror story to get our passes.

We get to the arena around 630. I get the tickets for our pals, no prob.
Glen and I go to the front door of the Taj Mahal... "Where do we pick up our press pass credentials?" I said... We were told the Box Office.

We get back to the box office, they look @ us like we are aliens... I asked to speak to someone in charge. The lady took our names and info. Came back a few minutes later. gave us comp tickets for the cheap seats. I told the lady "We were specifically told elbows on the canvas to shoot... We need real passes to do our job."

So I felt like a dick because I dragged Glen out and pushed Euphoria for a month for credentials to have it end like this? So, We go to the front doors, a lady in charge of security told us "No pro Lenses allowed" Which I replied "I am not leaving my friend and I, our 10,000 dollars worth of lenses and equiptment in a parking a garage". She said that there's nothing she can do. So, Glen and I walked to the other side of the arena, music playing as Bruce Buffer was announcing the night line up. We spoke to a woman in charge who in hindsight was a blessing for doing us a solid and getting HER supervision to come talk to us. After explaining our case. Throwing around a few names, showing a biz card, He wasn't able to get in contact with the Fight people, so He took us practically by the hands walked us into the arena with out lesnes. I bs'ed with the head of security which later on Glen asked "if I knew him personally since I spoke like I did." But, in reality I was just being friendly since this guy was actually helping us out and doing a great deal of good for us.
So we walk past the ring, and by the backstage area and BOOM! The security supervisor says "There is Miguel right there." I poped my head in, quickly explained who I was and when we spoke and mix up with passes @ the box office..." He pulls out a stack of "All Access Passes" gives Glen and I two with chains and said "You guys are late go find a spot @ ringside..." So after another handshake, a huge thanks to the Security Supervisor. We were in and on our way.

I gotta say the 20+ minutes to get in the door felt like hours, felt my heart sank a few times. Felt like crap that it almost didn't pan out for Glen and I. Felt like I was letting a friend down. But it worked out. I knew it was a cool experience for us being ringside, hearing the chatter of the fighters coaches durring the fight, hearing the hecklers which turned out to be my 2 closest friends next to Glens friend in the audience! It was great, and now as 2 days have gone by since the fights... It is starting to settle in how much of a once in a lifetimes experience the night was. Like I told Glen @ the end of the fights "I couldn't think of one other fight fan/photo enthusiest (sp?) that I would have rather spent the night shooting pics with.

Great pics! Glad to see it all worked out ok. Who was that with the Sony Z1? Had the same bother when we went to shoot at the Brit MotoGP about 15 years ago. They made us feel a right pair of twits, having to grovel for the promised passes. I haven't heard that 1 about no pro lenses before; I don't get the thinking behind that at all. Hope you got your poster shots?

Oh yeah I got some composition shots in mind for a nice 16x20 for my wall.

They were shooting with pd170's...
horribly I may add. Poor audio production. VERY POOR from the video crew.

MY IDEA... would be this.

Set up a fish eye lens wide shot camera in each fighters corner... With a lapel mic next to where the corner men are sitting or a good shotgun pointing @ them. This way you have cool overhead shots when they fight in corner plus a good audio track for the corner men screaming directions.

ofcourse 2 roaming cams, 1 on apron, 1 on the mat.

then 1 ultra wide room shot camera in the back of the arena, and then 2 tripod mounted cameras 1 for the traditional flat to the ring 3/4 above traditional boxing ring shot and then a coner/diamond shot of the ring.

THEN maybe a commentators camera pointed @ them. And if can be... an overhead static camera above the ring.

boy i need to move into event camera pro production!
