A shot from my first paid gig! Can't Post

Did my first paid gig for photography today! I did a portrait shoot for a single mother of her children, her and all of them together. Here's a shot I took with her two children together. (little bit of post softening in PS) Shot with EOS 1DmkII (@ 80 3.2), with 580ex flash bounced off ceiling.

I like it. I'm impressed with the even lighting by bouncing off the ceiling. I also like how the colors all seem to work together so nicely.

I keep shooting with a Nikon 5700 and can hardly stand myself when I see nice shots. I've had the itch for a Canon 20d with some of those really great lenses but I've had allegator arms when it comes to handing over my credit card. My 5700 really does what I need it to do most of the time but I would love something faster to shoot my son's hockey games. Wonder if I could justify a 20d to my wife by telling her I need it for better DVD cover stills?

Re: [Dieps] A shot from my first paid gig! [In reply to] Can't Post

Very nice. Here's a couple tips though:

Watch when you have people touch each other especially on the face - the way her cheek touches his, it mishapes his right eye so that it no longer matches the shape of his left. You want them to barely touch each other, and for him to slightly turn his head to his left.

Watch the hair across her eye. It is sometimes OK, and I think it would really work here if the hair didnt completely cover the catchlight in her eye.

Watch out when people put their arms around each other. It is usually distracting to see hands 'grow' out of peoples shoulders. If it is a pose that shows an arm and therefore direction to a hand, it can work, but in this case it would be better to have him drop his hand behind her.

When doing your soft focus in Photoshop, eliminate or minimize the halo where their heads meet the background. Try masking out the soft focus layer at those parts in about 15% increments. You dont want it to be completely sharp, but dont want the halo bleed of their skin color into the background either.

Nice work. They obviously were very comfortable with you. Very, very nice lighting. It looks very natural and deliberate at the same time - the mark of a great portrait. Since you have PS, offer to remove his braces for some extra $$!

Hopefully your impressed with how it came out. We have been interviewed secondary photographers for the past couple weeks and have found nobody that can work with light as well as you have shown here.

I would second that idea of having the heads touch less and trying to remove the halo- it kind of gives it that edited look. It is hard to tell from a smaller version, but it might be worthwhile to brush out the softness in the teeth region as well, or at least lower its opacity. It looks like you did that in the eyes and it may help in that region as well.

Overall, I think it is great. Wait until you do your first paid wedding photo gig, it can really be a lot of fun.

Nice shot Glen.

What was the response from your paying customer?

They were very pleased with the results. The size and number of prints the client orders will REALLY be the barometer though.

Thanks all for the input. Very good advice- much appreciated.

Glen,

Great job! Love the lighting.

I think you've meant to keep the boy's fingers showing as a 'reflection'
of the buttons... for symmetry? Sly

Good luck with the upcoming gigs, man!

Like it as i told ya on the phone, aside from heads touching, brothers hands are better left behind the sister on her back and not over the shoulder as it moves the clothes/bunches them up.

2, heads down a tad... Looking up someones nose is usually not appealing, When i get the pw to the site glena nd give it to you you'll notice my girls never have up nose shots.

Other than that I love it and it is a great example of the glass and cam you are working with.

Im gonna call you tonight (thursday) things got busy with me the past two days.

Although I did order a 2 gig cf card for Sat!!!!

Yeah my 2 gig card will be in tomorrow. Though I DID order it yesterday. Sometiems B&H doesn't get it out the same day. However it arrives the next day after it DOES go out. I'm close enough to NYC not to have to pay for overnight shipping Cool

I'm sick and achey now but I expect to be recouped by Saturday. Definitly call me to solidify plans for saturday's shoot. I still would like you to come over so I can show you the "studio" and some of my work I haven't shown online.
