Another dance photo Can't Post

Thanks to the help of DJ I'm going to try posting a photo again.

Shot at 1/60th shutter, aperture at f/4, iso at 800, Flip-It on flash tilted back approx. 60 degrees. Camera was a Canon 20D with a Canon 17-55 f/2.8IS lens.

Other than being resized this photo has not been retouched in anyway ... no sharpening, levels, nothing.

I had to switch over to my PC to get this done, but now that I know how to do it I'll probably be a royal PIA showing different shots.

I'm digging the softeness of the flip-it on the flash. Nice.

I think it's a matter of personal preference rather than one difusser being that much better than another.

My daughter uses the stofen on her 550 and I'm pleased with the results.

I don't like the lightsphere because of the weight and awkwardness ... not because of the results.

My personal preference is the flip-it simply because I can tweak it on the run and never touch the flash.

I have the LSPJ with the inverted dome for the 580. I need to sell it because I'm never going to use it.

My Sto-Fen knock-off does an awesome job of diffusing the light and eliminating shadows on the subjects close up. BUT, it causes background shadows because the lack of output for bounce. Without the Sto-Fen, bouncing the flash causes elminates the background shadows, but causes harsh shadows on the subject.

I'm looking forward to getting a FlipIt...seems like you'd get the best of both worlds, and it's easily adjustable!

Jenn,

One other thing ... Brian mentioned that he probably should have added some flash compensation. I believe stofen says that by using their product you lose about two stops of light. I'm doing this from memory so I might be wrong. Anyway, I'm sure you'll need to kick your flash up a little bit to get closer to the results you're looking for.

very nice sparky
Did you meter the light or just do a bunch of different settings.

Honestly, my reception halls don't vary too much around here when it comes to light. Although, there were four lamp poles surrounding the dance floor that usually aren't there. I've been shooting recptions (video) in this same venue for almost 15 years. I knew what to expect when I walked in the door.

This particular photo I just used program mode knowing exactly what my shutter and aperture would be set. The only thing I do, based on distance, is possibly adjust the flip-it. If they're further away I'll bring it straight up ... up close and personal I may just take it all the way back (not using it at all) and bounce right off the ceiling.

Some of the finer photographers might have a problem because this did not really allow for much ambient light. I have a few more that do.

Later on in the evening I went to manual but left all my other settings alone except for shutter speed, which I dropped down to 1/30th to allow for a little more ambient light.
