I can't help you with the $5000 f/1.8, however I can tell you the f/2.8 L is a very nice piece of glass, however I didn't use it much and sold it to a friend. A 200mm prime has special applications, of which I didn't have. At 2.8 it was very sharp with wonderful color saturation. I imagine the 1.8 would be better for ultra low light (read pitch black). If you looking for wedding photography, I find the 70-200 2.8 IS is the most popular among wedding photographers.

Thanks for the input. I just bought the Canon 200mm f/1.8 and I already have the Canon 70-200mm 2.8. Will get the Canon 200mm f/1.8 on Tuesday! Hopefully it's as good as reviews say it is.

Thanks again.

Very Nice! I was happy to have it recently. One of my friends got married and the reverand had a policy for no flash photography during the ceremony. I was sitting up in the balcony with this lens and had no problems taking pics. The official photographer couldn't take any photos at all.

Here is a pic of the unity candle from the balcony about 60 or so feet away using a Canon 20D.
