Wondering your thoughts on this if you've tried it.

After 24 views and no replies, I think it's safe to say that none of us have. :)

Are you thinking of getting one?

Do you think you might have a use for one?

I'm not sure, it's something I would want to look into more. Smile

Re: [Shadow] Anyone here used a Wein Safe Sync? [In reply to] Can't Post

Basically, when you need to consider this Safe Sync device is
when you are using a flash that is not of the same brand
as your camera. You need it if the operating voltage - or
"trigger voltage" as they call it - of your flash is too
high for your camera. If the flash voltage is too high
you put this Safe Sync device between the flash
and the cam. This device is basically a voltage
regulator which brings high voltage down to what is
safe for your cam.

You can either get a Safe Sync to put in your hot shoe
(if you plan to have the flash used on your shoe) or there
is a corded Safe Sync that you would use if you plan
to trigger the flash with your cam's PC socket.

Now, each cam brand/model is different but it is
my understanding regarding some of the popular
Canon cams that the permissible flash trigger voltage for the
hot shoe is no more than 6 volts and no more than
250 volts if triggered by the PC socket of your cam.

Here is a chart which shows the trigger voltages
of many of the third party flashes:

Okay. I got it in and tried it out. It works! Does just what it's supposed to do.
I tested my flash trigger voltage without the Wein Safe Sync and then with it.
I used a voltmeter to test and without the device the flash was putting out
272 volts! With the device the voltage was down to 5.96 volts, which is
under the limit for my Canon, which is 6 volts.

My main concern is that the device would be a loose fit in
the shoe because it does not have a lock on it, but the device's
rails that slide into the shoe are plenty thick so that it is a
tight fit; the flash will not fall out of the shoe when using this
device.

So, I do recommend this device.

Very cool news - thanks for testing and posting!

What's your volt meter - is this something fancy or something you can get at the hardware store? How did you learn to do all this stuff?

Hi, Shadow.

My voltmeter is not something fancy. I got mine at Sears but hardware stores
carry them.

I found some instructions on the web as to how to test the flash.

This voltmeter here is very similar to mine and shows where you put the
voltmeter leads:

It's pretty easy.

1. Turn on your flash till it is ready to be fired and leave it on
but don't fire it.

2. Turn your voltmeter to measure DC volts.

3. Put the red lead of the voltmeter on the center metal
piece sticking out of the bottom of the flash's hot shoe connector.

4. Put the black lead on the side metal contact of the flash's hot shoe.

5. Look at the reading on the voltmeter.

Here's another angle ... see, you put the red lead on the bottom and the
black lead on the side where it touches metal:

Here's some more about this issue:

Something like this would work:

Even an analog one like this would work:

A lot of guys have these things around so if a girl had a hubby or

boyfriend she could ask and see if he has a voltmeter or, as they are also

called, a multimeter.

Um, yeah, there's no tools here unless they are mine. Laugh

Thanks for the detailed instructions! I'm going to try this out on the new flash when it gets here.

And if you have any old film camera flashes around you
could try it on them, too.

You should let us know what your new flash measures out
at, once you do the test.

Just so you are not surprised ... When I was doing the
test on mine I dragged the red lead across the
bottom of the flash - on the metal projecting-out piece - and
the flash went off. No harm done, of course, but it
did give me a scare.

Thanks - yes I'll give it a try when the new flash comes in.
The Sigma that is the back up flash says it is 5.9v in the manual. Not sure what the cheapo flash would be.

Re: [Shadow] Anyone here used a Wein Safe Sync? [In reply to] Can't Post

You know ... it has just occurred to me that
some/most/?all of the non-dedicated flashes may
not support using 2nd curtain sync, for when
you'd want to drag the shutter. Have you
thought about this?

I tested my 3rd party flash on my Canon cam
by setting a 1-second exposure and setting
the cam at 1st curtain and 2nd curtain and
both ways the cam fired the shot
at the beginning of the exposure.
Maybe 2nd curtain can't be used with non-dedicated
flash? Anyone know about this issue?

I'll try it tonight.

To be honest, I've never really used that feature, although I could see you could get creative with some shots, that would be fun.
