Are these appropriate shoes for wedding photog? Can't Post

This is what the photog wore - barefoot in rubber flip flops:

Hey Brackish...you know around here photogs can where whatever they want. We wear black pants, dress shirt and black vest...nice but nothing fancy. I can't remember except once or twice where a photog dressed better than us. In those instances they felt they had to wear a tux with bow tie and the coat was off all day and the sleeves rolled up so they looked sloppier than us anyway.

We are dealing with higher end weddings in this market and most photogs are wearing casual/dress pants and pull over shirts. Some even wear jeans and a hat ( not a dressy hat but a casual hat). They definitely don't dress nice. If we dress like that we would be frowned upon.

I do have a more casual outfit for outdoor weddings and weddings on really hot days. When that happens the customer doesn't care that you are comfortable.

This was nowhere near a beach, Mazzy.

There's another photog I've worked with who shoots
inside the church barefoot.

YES & NO...

Not sure where to find that answer.... I guess if you asked "Would YOU where these shoes for wedding photog?" then you could get oppions.... but as far as what is the "RULE/LAW" thats not known.

Myself, I wouldn't because I don't like those type of sandles/flip flops/shower shoes....

I hate that thing between my toes... I would go with this style instead

I would also hit em with the garden hose first to clean off the dirt Smile

Some even wear jeans and a hat ( not a dressy hat but a casual hat). They definitely don't dress nice. If we dress like that we would be frowned upon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There seems to be a double standard. Basically, the photogs can wear whatever they want and it's okay. The women-photogs are more dressed down than the men. I've seen sweat pants at high-end weddings ... old worn jeans. Or some of the women dress like they're going out to a dance club - in the 1980's. Laugh About 95% of the time I'm dressed nicer than the photog is. I don't understand how they're seeing it. You'd think that at a wedding they'd think they should dress up a bit. Some southern california gal made the comment here that photogs "tend to dress very fashionably". I had to laugh at that one - a lot of the ones I run across are wearing the same thing they did 20 years ago. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do have a more casual outfit for outdoor weddings and weddings on really hot days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I should maybe look into that for myself - I dress the same regardless of indoor or out or what the temperature is.

I think the photogs come across as artsy and quirky and as such they are given lee way as being "that's how they are". One big studio in your market has a guy we have worked with in jean and a baseball hat turned backwards the whole day....even the wedding....what a slob.

When we get our reputations as an industry to the quirky artist stage we will be able to dress like we want as well.

Laugh Yeah, I had to laugh at that one as well.

While the majority that I work with dress pretty badly, especially the women, who often dress like it's laundry day, I do often notice that some of the high-end men at least wearing business-casual...with a blazer and all. I think that's an important part of why they can charge more. The other part being how they interact/schmooze with the client.

Last weekend at an island wedding, the church REQUIRED "worship clothes, a jacket and tie is mandatory"...or not be allowed to shoot. Yeah, right. Laugh At least I put on a tie, like I used to wear when I was a noob, but it was June with horrible coastal humidity, so I didn't wear the jacket. Obviously, the photog ignored the plea to dress appropriately and just wore the usual....XXXL sized belly stuffed into just a Large sized shirt from the "fashionable" WalMart Men's Dept.

I like wearing nice clothes to work. Not really expensive ones, just nice ones. I always wear a jacket with docker-like pants and a dress shirt and sometimes a tie. Pretty sure if someone shot a wedding in these parts of the world with a ball cap on backwards (or even forwards) they wouldn't get much work.

Fellow office pee-ons used to make fun of me for wearing a tie, and for putting on a blazer for meetings, at my old day jobs. Things are just way too casual in the corporate offices these days, especially the IT people...they're almost just as big of slobs as the hogzillas that work in Customer Service. Laugh Something as simple as wearing a tie can really boost your confidence, especially when everyone else is dressed like they're at a 4th of July trailer park barbecue. I honestly think it's one of the reasons I got laid off...everyone above me in the org chart didn't like that I was a twenty-something "company man".

I think I read somewhere,"dress like you have the job you want...not the job you have." Or something like that. The problem down here is just the heat/humidity. I thought I was gonna die of a heat stroke last weekend just wearing a tie. I gave up the whole "man in black" wedding videographer/photographer uniform thing a few weddings back, realizing we just look silly...like fat sweaty guys that failed in their career as a sidewalk mime.

From a couple of months ago, silly black Xtreme magician's outfit, complete with shootsak....

Kind of ironic that the photog is one of the worst-dressed
vendors of the day. Usually the Church Lady is better
dressed. The folks who deliver the flowers aren't too
dressed up, though, so I guess the photogs are generally
better dressed than them. But ... usually no one sees
the flower delivery personnel except for the Church Lady
and videogs. The photog is almost never there yet
when the flowers arrive whereas I almost always show up
before the flowers arrive - it's not unusual that I beat the
Church Lady there and then the place is all locked up.

Heck yeah...even weddings close by here in the city, I arrive 2 hours early, and wait for them to open the church. You never know what can happen on the road, you could get a flat, your car battery could be dead, you could open you camera case and realize you forgot batteries for the wireless, and there's plenty to do when you get to the church.

One time, all THREE of the photogs arrived at the church AFTER the processional (I posted a candid audio clip from the wireless, of the groom expressing how pissed he was because the pre-ceremony pics were so important to her and they never showed up.) Turns out all 3 photogs were at the reception hall, wondering where all the guests were. Laugh They came running into the church, machine gunning EVERYTHING, flashes and all.

I even got yelled at by some woman in the bride's family, since she assumed I was with the photog's company, before the ceremony.

Later that night, the head woman photog, wearing her Sun dress and flip flops, and I were talking about the huge Houston bridal show. She said she didn't book people at the show, because they were among the most expensive photographers in town, and most brides couldn't afford them. She said this very proudly. All I could think, is how THIS couple didn't really have much money...they had really strained their budget to hire who they thought was the best, and got screwed by their incompetence.

That's unfortunate - to stretch the budget for "the best" and end
up getting screwed. I wonder why the photogs were at the reception hall.
Didn't they know they had to shoot the ceremony?

Same here. I like to arrive atleast 2 hours before the start of the ceremony. If there's bride prep coverage, then I like to arrive 2 hours before the bride arrives, so this ends up making my arrival about 3 hours before the start of the ceremony.
Of course, the photogs are never there that early because they
have far less equipment to unpack and set up. As an example,
my own case weighs 60 pounds - and that's with only 1 camera
inside it! This doesn't include other cams, any tripods or mic
stands so in addition to my 1 case, there are 2 or 3 other cases
(packed tight) plus several bags of tripods, monopods, and mic
stands.

Laugh I found I still had the groom's comments on my hard drive. This was him, in the "groom's room" a few minutes before the ceremony....recorded by Senn G1 wireless, across a hallway...on the opposite side of a MASSIVE church, on the second floor side balcony I was shooting from. I was listening in, just amazed that I could actually hear them from so far away.

"It's not like this is the first wedding the photographers have
been to." Laugh

All 3 photogs just inexplicably went to the reception hall rather
than the church.

And I think 3 photographers is getting to be a bit much.
The wedding I just "videoed" Sly had 2 photogs and they
were all over the place - real obtrusive like - seemed a
bit much. Out on the dance floor ... singing and dancing
along to the Cha Cha Slide and YMCA ... always tapping
the dancers on the shoulders to pose for a picture. How
many guest dancing pictures do you need???!!!????
With all the flashing from 3-feet away you'd think someone
important like Paris was there. Laugh
