At the risk of sounding waaaay stupid... explain Lightroom to me Can't Post

Like I said - at the risk of sounding stupid - I figured I better ask this question here before in a photog forum. I can't figure this out - what is the benefit to using a program like Lightroom over the Adobe Bridge. I was reading that CS3 is going to be released, probably sometime late spring with a new and improved version of Adobe Bridge. But then, I swear I read that CS3 was going to be packaged w/ this wonderful Lightroom. Both seem to have the beta versions ending simultaneously.

There seem to be several programs to do the same thing: Camera Raw, Phase One, Lightroom... and then there's the Canon processing program and Adobe Bridge. Am I wrong in thinking they all do pretty much the same thing in different ways?

What makes Lightroom so much more special. I went to the website, read some stuff, watched a few tutorials... and it all looked good to me, so I showed it to Brian, and he said, "So why do we need that? We have Adobe Bridge..." I didn't know how to answer. Either I was brainwashed by the propaganda, or there really is a reason I need it.

Just like with video, this is the crap I have so little patience for. I just want to shoot and make it look pretty. Wink

Any help or clarification greatly appreciated.

EDIT* In case you haven't figured it out - this is Jenn. That PIA was signed in and I didn't realize it - I swear I signed in, too. hmph Tongue

okay - the question was actually from me. Funny how right after I posted it, I returned to the board to find another Lightroom post right below it. See - people are talking about it and I wanna know (and understand) why.

I must be stupid too because there's no answers here.Laugh

Camera Raw plugin, CS2 and Bridge do what I need very easily and swiftly, and without *any* problems. Solid as a rock. I don't need anything more in terms of features, unless those features are free (i.e. I ain't paying to upgrade). Last thing I need is another bloody software package to learn.

I think lightroom is like Bridge Lite, the sort of app you would have on your laptop to do the preliminary sorting before you get back home.

More like Bridge HEAVY. It can organize and sort like bridge but you can do Raw & JPG processing along with corrections to exposure, color, cropping, straightening, etc. Best of all...ALL the changes are non-destructive and based on XML. Thus relieving the need to save various versions of your high res file effectively soaking up HD space.

I'm thinking about picking it up considering Apple's Aperture chokes when you feed it a large project (4,000 images or more).

Adobe agrees with you. From what I read this week, Adobe think Bridge and PS are too much for most photogs, who don't need all the graphic abilities and that they can do most of their work with lightroom. I have to say that since I have been using CS3 beta, I can get photos more or less finished just in Bridge and only go into PS to add filters and effects. I presume the workflow is similar in lightroom?
