Back from Vacation and volunteered photo shoot Can't Post

Well, I am back from my vacation, and the family photoshoot that I was "asked" to do.

They called us on the way there (30 minutes out) and asked if we were still planning to take photos at the family reunion. Unsure

When we arrived, they basically turned the whole event over to us and it turned out to be a "photo party", not a family party with photos. Surprise!

There were about, oh...84 people including me. I asked one of my wife's aunts why she wasn't taking the photos (she has done photos in the past) and she said that she hates big groups. She did a group of 50 once and it was a nightmare, and none of the pictures worked out when she was done.

That made me feel SO much better about things. My wife stepped up (it was her side of the family) and got people organized since she knows them better than me, and I think it worked out.

The lighting was uneven, so I had to merge 2 different exposures of the same shot and brighten up the back row...they weren't getting as much light from the stage lights as the front people. Also, the largest picture is composed of 3 shots spliced together to get better detail for a large/wide print.

Tips for future things like this:

1 - don't ever do a group this size again
2 - make sure lighting is more even (hard to tell on the spot, but you notice it later)
3 - make sure you have a good assistant
4 - don't ever do a group this size again

Here are some sample portraits of the trip (reduced in size/quality for web):

Thanks...it was kind of pot luck and craziness....but hopefully they will be all right for the family. Nothing fancy, though. Maybe I'll use the word "practical" Tongue

I think the group shots turned out great too. I can't believe the size of the group! Better you than me :) You da man. Hardest thing to do in portraiture, as far as I'm concerned.
