Best camera (with lens) for around $700 Can't Post

I need to recommend a good camera to a friend and they want a SLR. They want to spend aroun $700 for the body and the lens. I was going to recommend the Canon Digital Rebel EOS 300D but it seems that camera is no longer being manufactured. Any other recommendations for a decent camera around that price?

The Digital Rebel has been replaced by the Digital Rebel XT, same price range.
I'm impressed by the info I've seen on the Olympus E-Volt 500, although I must caveat this by saying I haven't used either camera.

Steve,

I just received my Olympus Evolt 300 today. This is my first DSLR and I am on a budget. Cameta Cameras on eBay seems to be selling a ton of these as reconditioned models. Mine really looks brand new. I paid $455 with a 14-45mm lens included. I bought a couple of extra batteries and a compact flash card for a grand total of about $550 for an 8 megapixel DSLR. It has most of the same features as the Evolt 500. I've barely used it, but am pretty excited to have my first DSLR.

I got my Nikon D50 @ Circuit City $755. Can't say it's "the best" camera.... but after talking to my Florida Photographer friend and looking at other models in shootouts/comparisons/reviews I went with the Nikon. So far I am pleased with it. I just need to learn the ins and outs of DSLR.
