CF Cards, folders Can't Post

When I'm transferring files from a card to the computer I can see the folders on the card in the explorer window - then I click and drag to the drive to copy.

I have noticed that there are folders on the card that are empty.

Has anyone seen this? I will format a card before an event so I know it shouldn't be anything left over from the previous event.

Has this happened to anyone else? It would seem all my photos are there (mind you it was an overly long day with TONS of group shots of different people, so I'm not exactly sure if something woudl be missing, although it does seem like it is all there, there's just extra folders with nothing in them. This happened on a few different cards.

Yes ... it's natural and nothing to worry about. I don't remember the technical reason behind it, but it's not a problem.

Some of the better programs like Photo Mechanic or Image Capture on a Mac simply pull all the files off the card as opposed to working with folders.

Thanks Sparky.

I did a test and formatted a disk clean. Didn't take any photos, and put the card directly into the card reader to see what was on it, just an empty folder.

There were so many group shots yesterday, it was impossible to keep track. Every guest had at least one group shot with the b&g at the church, as well as at a 'live studio' set up during the cocktail hour, plus the prep, ceremony, bridal party & family photos, tea ceremony, and reception photos to 11pm. I had about 1000 images when all was said and done and my hand hurt from holding the camera for that long. Sly

That's normal to have a couple empty folders. I think they're just default folders so the computer can recognize the card as like a mini-drive.
We read you should always format the card in the camera and not in a computer reader slot too.

Also about the focusing issue. The body or the lens could have back focus issues where the sensor is looking past the subject and focusing on objects in the background instead. If it happens often and with multiple lenses...may be time to send the body to Canon for a tune up.

Thanks Jenn

I did have a backfocus problem with that camera and sent it in already. I wondered if that was the problem of if it was the lens.
It seems so weird that I'm standing in the same spot, same settings, fire off a zoomed shot which is clear then go wide and the wide shot is soft.

I'm going to do some tests today with the 40d (I ended up getting one), and the 20d compared to see if it is possibly a camera issue or a lens issue. Of course, things at home always are different then things out in the field but I'll see what I can figure out.
Maybe the back focus is gone again on the 20d, I have no idea how that works, if it can go again after it has been fixed. The weddings from last year are fine, just this last one seemed a bit soft on the wider shots.

I think I need a less stressful and less expensive job. Wink

Photography stressfull...nahh Wink I've got more grey hair now at age 39 than my two older brothers who both have kids.

How do you like the 40D? One thing I love is that you can erase one image without fear of erasing all images.
Also love the custom settings knob. So far I learned to create a custom setting with the focus assist on and with it off so I can quickly turn it to C3 (for example) if I need it but then quickly turn of off by switching to C2 mode.

I've got more grey hairs than I think I should too! Oh well, I earned them so I'll keep them.

Thanks - re folders. I feel better now. I'm always paranoid about losing pictures.

I love the 40d! It is such a big improvement over the 20d. I really like the picture styles and the quick access to them. Also I like the option for auto ISO if i wanted to use it. The focusing is so much quicker on the 40d than the 20d. The 3" lcd is pretty sweet too!
And yes, that pesky delete all function is gone thankfully!

I just got the 40d a few days ago so I haven't had chance to set up the custom settings buttons but i really like the idea. The 20d had filesets but it wasn't as easy to change them as it is on the 40d.
I did some portraits in the studio with the 40d the other day, they turned out sharp, and really great right out of the camera. I didn't have to do anything to them for the client gallery except for resize them.
I'm hoping the 40d will save me lots of time in post this wedding season.

how different is it from the 30d, (I think you guys had a 30d if I remember correctly)

Cheers
Heidi

Here's one difference ... the 40D has an auto ISO function??? I've read a lot about the 40D and never heard anything about that.

I'm still using two 20Ds and a 30D. Since I'll probably be purchasing one or two video cameras this year my intention is to hold onto these for this season. They all made me money last year and I guess there's no real reason to make any changes ... yet. Angelic

Yep, auto ISO which one neat thing about that option is that if you use your flash it will automatically go to 400ISO.

The 20d and 30d are great cameras, so if they're working for you, not need to change.
My other camera was a rebel, so I wanted at least something a little more profesional than what many of the guests were carrying around. Laugh

I know what you mean about spending money though, it seems never ending. I've had my current video gear for 5 or 6 seasons now, I don't want to upgrade but at some point I probably will have to go hd. Maybe I can get another year or two out of them since no one here is asking for hd right now.

Anyway, about the 40d, the one thing I like about it over the 20d is it has "picture styles" button at the back. This has some colour/saturation settings in there.
It will do a great job so that I have to do little work for the proofs. With the shots out of the 20d I needed to adjust brightness, colour saturation and contrast. With the standard picture style setting on the 40d the photo looks great right out of the camera.

Cheers
H

ha ha. I'M SORRY SPARKY!!!

You know, I wrote that, then erased that thinking "I'd best not tell him so he doesn't want to spend any money", then figured it was good info and re-typed it.
PM me if you're interested in seeing some photos straight out of the 40d.

;)
