Camera stolen (not mine) Can't Post

Just wanted to pass this along so as you know to be cautious.

A photog I know of just had his cam stolen. He was shooting the

after-ceremony pics by the lake and put his cam down.

Next he went to find it it was gone - with all the ceremony

pics on the card that was still in the cam! These were the only

pics from the ceremony at all because the church only

allowed pics to be taken by the pro, so no family was allowed

to take snaps.

Do y'all think about the prospect of a stolen cam and how

to reduce the chances?

The photog I just worked with was setting her cam down

a number of times at the reception (on a dinner table)

when she left the room. She'd be out of the room for several

minutes at a time and the cam was on a table near

where the guests enter the ballroom, sitting next to the

guest book.

That's terrible!

I see people set their cameras down and walk away, it freaks me out.

I always have two on me at one time (should look at that funky neck strap you mentioned on an earlier post). I have set them down beside me though.

I'm nervous having my gear bags out, not that there's much choice, but I think of how much money is in the bags, batteries and all the other stuff in there. I always keep the recorded tapes on me, but I used to keep them in the bags.

That's too bad about the pics, maybe someone will feel incredibly guilty and send the card back to the photog.

Well Brack,

Two things come to mind about the cards and the images already captured on them. One, the photographer could keep a cheap notebook under their car seat and just copy the images to that hard-drive as they are in route to a post-ceremony location. Two, the photographer could simply remove the camera's card and put them in their glove box of their car; thus, eliminating the possibility of loosing everything in the event someone steels their camera. The memory cards are cheap; I think a photographer could afford to drop an extra $60 to get a couple more cards for such purposes.

I'm sure we've all been in a situation that we didn't secure our equipment as well as we should have, and that we were lucky not to have it stolen.
The best you can do... is to make sure your stuff is under a watchful eye at all times. (that can be tuff, if you work solo....(like I do))
During ceremonies, I place my gear near the front of the church, with only the bare necessities in my possession...like cards, batteries, lens... I where pants with cargo pockets on the sides.

The only time I take my camera off is when I'm sitting down at
the dinner table. I keep a bit more watchful eye on the stills
cam than I do the video cam because it's smaller
and probably more desirable than a large video camera.
The only guests video cameras I see are the very small
ones - I've never seen a guest with a camcorder such
as a GL2 or VX.

On my compact flash cards I have written "Reward" and a
phone number.

I've heard that the married couple involved have offered
a no-questions-asked return of their ceremony pictures
but, so far, there has been no luck for them.

How do you carry the two? Both around your neck? Different length of straps?

Both have a neck strap and one has a hand strap so usually it is one around my neck and one in my hand, but if I need both around my neck I can do it. It is annoying though as I find those neck straps itchy. They need cashmere ones I think.

Re: [John K.] Camera stolen (not mine) [In reply to] Can't Post

I wonder, John, if there is any place here for a discussion of
not putting all your eggs in one basket.
Many of us know about talk that using too large of cards
is too risky - risky due to possible loss of the cards, or
corruption of the card.

I know a few photogs who work for one of the very large
agencies in my area, where the photogs are all
stringers. This company does all the booking and post
work and they just hire photogs to
go out and shoot the day of. The company supplies
cards to the photogs - and they only supply 1 gig cards.
The only complaint I've heard from one of their stringers about
this company is one photog told me "I wish they'd give us 2 gig
cards instead so that we don't have to keep changing
out cards".

2 - 4 gig cards
2 - 2 gig cards
6 - 1 gig cards

Occasionally I will get a corrupt file, but I believe that's about 2 - 4 of them this year. That's 2 to 4 files that were corrupted and not cards.

I just hold my breath, shut my eyes and shoot like a three fingered monkey.

I think about it and I try to be cautious but sometimes I leave my (video) cameras with my other equipment by the DJ for periods of time. I have been lucky but it only takes once. With no equipment insurance, I may be more cautious from now on.

I usually leave my equipment by the wall next to the DJ. We're in smalltown.usa so I don't get too worried, but I know it's always a risk. I do have insurance as well.
