Carrying cameras at a wedding/reception... Can't Post

I see most photogs carry a standard camera bag, with everything in there.

Some also carry their #2 camera strapped around their neck, with a different lens attached.

Their camera bag is often left unattended in the mean time.

I'm wondering if it would be easier to ditch the big camera bag altogether, and just use two belt holsters? I don't plan on using my backup camera much during the reception, but I'd want it at arms length when I do, not sitting in a bag behind the DJ 100' away. Plus, I don't wanna risk it walking off.

But I also don't wanna look like a dork wearing a Batman Utility Belt, with two DSLR's, flash power pack, telephoto lens case, 5 pounds of batteries and memory cards, etc, all hanging from my waist. Laugh

My digital kit is already pretty heavy with just one SLR, flash+power pack, extra batteries, two lenses, etc, all in one bag hanging on my shoulder.

Thinking of getting a couple of these toploading cases instead of carrying my big bag. Plus I don't like using camera straps at all, especially when walking down the street....makes me look like a tourist. Tongue

I would use a small strap, even a wrist strap, all of the time. It would make me a little sick to stumble on something and drop the camera while off balance.

P.S. The bag looks nice, though.

Yeah, as much as I hate how I get tangled up in camera straps, I guess it would be a matter of time before one of my cams hit the floor. I bet your hands would get pretty tired from carrying it for several hours straight.Crazy

That is the sort of bag I have. My cameras are in that or round my neck. I prefer to have my main cam on a short neck strap that is just long enough to lift to my eye and holds the cam just under my collar bones. I am looking for some ex-army webbing to fit pouches onto to carry my other lenses. At the moment, I have a small, wheelie rucksack that I force my son to tote Angelic The trouble I find with those bags is that they seem to form a dust bowl at the bottom so I have to blow the lens clean everytime I take it out. It sure beats carrying two big wheelie containers for video though Unsure

I just carry two cameras on me at all times. The 30D with 17-55 F2.8 IS around my neck and my 20D with 70-200 F2.8 IS on my shoulder. Both mounted with flashes on their hotshoes.
Lowepro compact flash/battery holder on my belt.

That is all.

Camera bag in the trunk of my car.

LowePro has webbing that uses their Sliplock attachment lens and gear cases.

They even have assualt vests if you're shooting weddings in southern Lebanon.Laugh

I already look too arabic to wear anything that looks like a padded jacket Crazy. It is bad enough wearing a work-vest that looks like a bullet-proof vest when the pockets are full, with all the weird glances it gets when I am out shooting urban stuff. In fact, I am very careful not to say "shoot" or blow up" when I am wearing it Laugh

I actually bought the getup on the right, after two weddings and several Rambo & Batman references, it is now sitting in my closet Crazy

LaughLaughLaugh I can imagine!

I frightened off a pack of about 5 valets when I quickly jumped out of my Jeep in a ritzy old school downtown club, threw on my loaded black safari vest full of kit, and dragged the 1650 and big tripod case out of the back.Laugh Now I just carry a small utility bag with all my extra tapes, batteries, Skittles, light, etc, in it. I look like a poof wearing a purse, but at least it doesn't frighten anyone.Laugh

Remember, it isn't a purse, it's a "European Men's Carry-All".

Rusty what kind of flash are you using, one of those big puppies?

THe only shoot I was out on I had the main camera around my neck, well, I carried it across my body instead as the neckband doesn't feel so good against the neck. I also had a small low-pro bag with the spare one that I just carried over my shoulder and put on the floor wherever I was.
Inside that was the spare camera, batteries, and a big bottle of tylenol.

Yeah, it's pretty big. I'm thinking I wouldn't want to have two bodies+flashes dangling around my neck...seems like something would break...the flash, the shoe, or my neck. Crazy

Do you find it throws enough light to balance out in mixed lighting situations (bright sunlight and shade through the leaves causing shadows on the face).

I only tried it in super Full Power mode as an outdoor fill flash a few times, and it did great. It better...it cost about the same as the camera. Tongue

Re: [RustyB] Carrying cameras at a wedding/reception... [In reply to] Can't Post

I know, it's nutty how much this stuff costs. I bought a used lens for $450, was $499 and talked my way to a $50 discount then somehow in my mind figured it cost less, but that must be some kind of crazy 'chick math' used when shopping so that I don't have to go home and tell how much money I just spent.
At least it wasn't spent on shoes.
