I'm gonna tell you to get the Canon 20D but if you can afford it get the 5D. Trust me the 20D is just one very sweet camera period but the 5D is even better. Nikon i know nothing about but those who hav eit are very loyal to it just as Canon owners are.

The 5D DOES cost just a wee bit more (like, double), but it does look promising, too...

Can't afford either now, but...

You need to go lens and flash shopping too. In the end, the base is almost disposable and you will invest and keep the lenses far longer.

I was a Nikon advocate (old F4) about 15 years back, and really expected them to be better. Knoxville is smalish, so I went to Atlanta to evaluate. I looked at both Nikon and Canon, with various lenses and took test images in the stores to evaluate. I brought a flash card to take images home and review. The Canon felt better to me and was more logical. They are actually not far from one another in the results.

I researched on photography forums, which suggested that Canon had better zoom lenses while Nikon's wide angles were better. I think I was seeing bias because I never really have seen the difference.

Alas, I went with Canon 20Ds for my digital re-emergence as I was more impressed with Canon's results at higher ISO's with "fast" L-series lenses (for low-light issues in local dark venues). I've been pleased with my decisions, but the decisions need to be made based on what YOU need it for...

BTW. 5D looks really nice, but it will not be worth didly without compatible lenses.......... Can you say "Cha-Ching??$?$?$?$"

Sheila,

I have the 20d and the newer D70"S". Both cameras have their own advantages and disadvantages. I enjoy using the Nikon more, but the Canon with the "L" lens has better picture quality. If you're just starting out, I would suggest the Nikon because it is easier to use and it's less expensive. If you already know photography, and you have the money, go with the 20d.

Before you make a decision, you may want to read these reviews:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/20dd70.htm
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos20d/
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/

I would also check out the new Nikon d200. It might be in your price range as well. Hope this helps.

Hi Lee,
How do skin tones compare? That was the main reason I bought the 20D. I had been seeing prints from Nikons, Fugi's, ect and the skin tones made people look like manaquins.
It just didnt look right. Then I was demo'd a 20D, saw the skin tones and was sold. Felt like I was committing sacrilage against my Nikon system. I find the 20D fits better in my hand. The Nikon's have a ridge your finger has to go over, the Canon, your finger just ends up in the right spot.

WLR, there could be several reasons for this. I keep the D70 on the vivid image setting to get better colors. Thanks for bringing this up. Sometime I will do side by side comparisons of shots using both cameras on the same settings to compare the image quality and colors. I'll post them on here if I'm able to figure out how.

Sometimes I have a hard time with comparisons with the "same settings" since each device behaves differently. I agree more with shooting one with the settings that best match it, then shooting the other with its own best settings, and comparing the end result. After all, you aren't comparing settings, you are comparing results.

Just a thought...

In terms of the image quality, the D50 is better than the D70s. (better color latitudes, less noise)

the nikon d50 is designed more for point and shoot purpose. the included kit lens is not very good compare with the kit lens from the d70s kit.

for a better model and lens, i would suggest getting the d70s instead of d50 for two very important reasons. first, d70 uses compact flash cards, the d50 uses sd card. second, d70s built-in flash head is able to remotely control an external flash like the sb600 or sb800 in nikon's creative lighting system (CLS).

I don't think that's true. It has all the manual controls you need, and you can buy a body only and get the 18-70mm F3.5-4.5 lens or the Tamron 28-75mm "F2.8" lens.

The image quality of the D50 is clearly better than that of the D70s. I don't mind using SD cards because they are just as good as CF cards, just smaller.

Yeah. Smile The D50 has much less noise than the D70s at high ISOs and the improved image processing algorithm, and also produces more vibrant colors (like Canon). I've seen people selling their D70s' and buying the D50's because of all that.

The D50 DOES have the noise reduction, but it makes skin tones look like plastic. I would suggest reading www.dpreview.com before making a decision. If you are considering the 20D (not D20), then you really need to look at the new Nikon D200 it is more of a comparison. dpreview is a GREAT site for anyone shopping for digital cameras - their reviews are amazing.
