Cool lens sharpness chart: Compare two lenses at once using different f-stops Can't Post

Ran across this and thought I'd pass it along:

http://the-digital-picture.com/...a=9&LensComp=375

You mouse over it to compare the two lenses you choose.

Top chart is center of the lens, middle chart is toward

the edge, and bottom chart is far edge.

What a great website that is. Makes it easy to see how much trade-off there is with lower aftermarket prices. The Canons are mostly very sharp but the others not so much.

The 400/2.8 is about the best picture but likely a small fortune. Too long for weddings anyhow.

Isn't it though.

One neat thing you can do is put the same lens for both
charts but at different f-stops, so you can see how
the lens improves as it's stopped down. The chart
even show how light falloff on the edges - sometimes
called "vignetting" - is improved from full wide-open by stopping
down a bit. A good example is the Canon 20mm 2.8, which
seems to have quite a heavy light falloff when wide
open:

http://the-digital-picture.com/...Comp=0&APIComp=2

If I set up the above link correctly you should see the Canon 20 at 2.8

and then the 20 stopped down to 4. Besides the lifting of the

light falloff, also notice the dramatic improvement

in center sharpness with just 1 stop down.

Interesting. I am interested in a 17-50 range lense, and it looks like the Tamron $449 lense (2.8) looks much better than the Canon $950 lense...I thought that would be opposite as many reviews of Tamron lenses really only have liked the 28-75 (which I own and like)

Hi, Postal.

I've seen some good comments about the Tamron 17-50. If you
like the 28-75 I think it would be worth giving the 17-50 a try.

I was recently considering the Tamron 17-35 just so that I
could have something on the wide end, after the
discussions here about the need for something wide beyond
the formals at the church. (The 17-35 seemed to have pretty
good reveiws.)

Seems like this would only be an issue with 35mm or Canon full-frame DSLR's?

One time I worked with a photog at a wedding who was
using either the Nikkor 300/2.8 or 400/2.8. Thing was
about a foot long. Price of the lens was around $5000.
I even made a comment to him like "nice lens" and he
replied that he only bought the very best lenses, adding
that in his line of work it didn't make sense to use anything
but the best he could.

I should add that he's one of the highest-paid wedding
photogs in my state so, with the prices he charges, he
can afford those type of lenses and his clients probably
deserve that considering the money they're shelling out.
