Could this be true about flash usage? Can't Post

I saw where a full-time pro photog was saying that his
second job is being a wedding officiant. He said that when
he's officiating, he has noticed the majority of hired-in
pros don't use any other flash than the one that's
built into their camera! Meaning they just use the
cam's pop-up flash!! The "majority"???

And he said these guys are always giving him their business
cards, looking for referrals to future brides so he knows
they're paid pros.

Well, it's certainly not the case at the one's I videotape
but it's often the clients with bucks who also get
video, so they hire the expensive photogs, too.
So, basically, we videogs often are not taping
"average weddings" but frequently more extravagant
affairs.
But I'm just wondering if average weddings have the
photogs who are only using the pop-up flash.

the last wedding I taped had a photographer that was a friend of the family (but an official wedding photog returning a favor) and she just used the built in, and so did her assistant. I don't know how the photos worked out.

One photog around here who is quite popular (she's very reasonably priced and well known on the wedding forums as she participates there), I have seen her use on camera flash.
I know she's only been into photography for a year and from watching her I don't think she's all that versed technically. But.... she does get a lot of work so I guess that's where personality and creativity come into play.

But yeah, I cringe a bit when I see people using that direct crappy on camera flash. I just think overexposure on the forhead and cheeks!

I've seen on other forums where photogs talk about being invited
guests at a wedding and they are shocked to see that there'll be a
crew of 2 or 3 hired-in pro photogs who are shooting with
basic entry-level cams and the pop-up flashes only.

I think I'd be embarrassed to show up as the hired pro and be using pop-up flash. And the forums I know of they don't like vendors around. Must be different by you?

This forum has lots of vendors that chat with the brides. I think they're all very friendly.
But yeah, I'd be embarassed too.
I guess if someone has only been doing "professional photography" for a year, they might not know enough not to do that.

I guess part of it comes down to how well you know your gear as well...I have seen some phenomenal photos from point-and-shoots, but the lighting has to be right. Technically, the flash is used to improve poor conditions, and a built-in flash is just very limited in HOW it can improve those conditions. There are some venues, however, that don't allow flash (at the ceremony), so I guess in those instances it doesn't really matter that much. For some of the other shots, however, a bigger, more versatile flash would pretty much be needed to compensate for poor conditions.

I've gotten some great shots from my sony point and shoot too, but that's without flash in natural light. My personal taste, I don't care much for flash photographs, they look like flash was used.
Indoors I don't have a choice in most cases but I never use that on camera flash. It's too direct and doesn't produce a nice even light. But then again, I don't like a flashy looking photograph.

The majority of wedding ceremonies I go to, they don't use flash at all, until the formals, and at that time the officiate only sticks around for the very 1st photo with the B&G and then leaves, so how would they know anyways who's using the built-in flash?

I've seen a few photogs using the built-in flash, but it was usually the assistant...probably just training.

Lately I'm seeing natural light photography becoming more popular at the reception, I guess since the new DSLR's are getting so much cleaner in bad lighting. I'd love a D3....who needs a flash? Cool
