Digital Camera for Real Estate Can't Post

I have a budget for $500 to spend on a digital camera that I need for taking pictures of houses. Can anyone sugguest a good brand and model for me to look at for that price?

It's not likely that you'll get a camera with interchangeable lenses on your budget. If you are putting photos on-line, or publishing small pictures (3x5 or less), you don't need more than 3 megapixels. What you do probably need is a wide field of view. Find a camera with a decent wide angle, a 20x zoom is probably not useful to you.

How about the Nikon 5400 (300 after rebate) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...tlist&sku=285703 + the WC-E80 wide angle adapter http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ku=257196&is=REG (170 - takes the 5400 to 22mm wide)?

Take a look at this: http://www.digitalsecrets.net/secrets/CP5400.html And while you're at it buy his (Peter iNova) Nikon eBook... its worth every penny.

I owned the Coolpix 5000 with its wide angle adapter and it was ideal for real estate/architecture type shots.

What you really need is out of your budget. A nice w/a lense around 16mm and a ts lense (tilt shift) to correct the architectual lines. $500 can get you a consumer cam and a w/a "adapter". Might do the job- depends on how discerning you are with imagery.

It is impossible to recommend a focal length without knowing the size of the focal plane. For a 35mm focal plane, a quality 24mm would be quite sufficient for real-estate photos. A fisheye lense is required for some of the cool VR tools, but I wouldn't recommend it for straight photos; especially outdoor shots, where you can get back far enough for a standard wide angle to work fine.

Using a camera with a fixed lense, it's unlikely that you'd find anything that would offer a wide field of view. The ones I have used with a moderate wide angle have pretty bad barrel distortion.

Before I get too far from my original point, it's important to realize that focal length is strictly the distance from the objective lense to the focal plane. Depending on the size of the focal plane, the same focal length will give you a varying field of view.

For example, with a 1/2" CCD, a 10 mm lense is not wide angle, whereas, with a 5"x7" view camera, a 50mm is extreme wide angle (fisheye).

My Panasonic DVC-80 has a 4.5 - 45mm lense, but it does not have a wide field of view at it's widest focal length. By contrast, I get a wider field of view with my 28mm lense on my 35mm camera.

That depends on what the poster wants to do with the camera. My wife is in real estate, and she carries a tiny Pentax Optio 4S in her portfolio. She can take it everywhere, since it's so small, and it takes great pictures. Not "great" in the sense that they'd be good to blow up and hang on the wall, but "great" for sending to clients to let them know what a house looks like inside and out.
