Distortion correction for wide formals? Can't Post

Just wondering if anyone is doing any distortion correction
on formals shot with a wide lens? I saw where some
photog said he notices objectionable distortion
when using 22mm (on 1.6 crop, which is about
35mm on full frame).

Anyone doing any post correction when shooting
formals with a wide angle of view, such as when
shooting large groups? Or do you find that
the distortion is not really significant enough to
be noticed by the client?

Brackish-

I recently used my Sigma 10-20 to shoot group photos for a dance school. I was in the 17-20mm range on a 1.5x body, yielding 35mm equivalents of 26-30mm. Was there some distortion at the edges of the image? Yes. Did I place people there? No. On a few of the larger shots, I did have some folks coming closer to the edge than I would like, but... not much you can do when the groups start numbering above a certain point. It was easy to use PS to remove the (minimal) distortion that existed in those shots. Even if I had left it alone, I doubt they would have noticed (but I wouldn't want to chance it).

As long as you know what the lens produces, you can compose the shot in an appropriate manner so as to minimize its limitations.

How did things work out with Tallyns, eppie?

Smooth as silk, and I love the lens. I'll happily buy from them again.

Depends on the backdrop, and whether there are vertical/horizontal lines where the distortion occurrs. I still seldom find it too significant, and hence leave it untouched.

I never touched it early on, but you notice things more as you improve. Maybe I'll be tweaking it next year...

My main concern is the people looking distorted rather than
problems with architecture lines.

Then don't fill the edges with people if you can help it. I actually am using a full-frame for formals so that I can stay wider than needed a bit.

We use a Canon 10-22mm and correct WA distortion via CS3 with the distort tool. Works like a champ.

If peoples' heads are stretched/elongated, does the distort tool correct that, too?

It does but remember you must throw away many pixels to get it. If subjects are close to the edge you can say arrivederci to them.
