Re: [DarrenS] Engagement Pictures [In reply to] Can't Post

I tried the trial of Photomatix...I liked what it did. Then I read some comparisons between that and CS3 and they came up with:

Photomatix is easier to work with
CS3 gives you more flexibility with your results (but is more complex)

So I figured since I wanted CS3 for other tools (upgrade from PS7) I would just get it instead of Photomatix...I may rethink that option if I can't get them to work out better.

Nice job...fun poses...not sure about the women leaning in showing the ring...looks like she fell into the picture. The 1st pic was so awesome. A few looked a tad bit oversaturated but nice if that's the look you're going for.

We struggle with too much magenta (usually on men's faces) not sure why. I know Canons are a little on the red side. The latest we shot ... the bride was very pale which made it tough to color correct...but we're trying to find a good balance without overusing PS effects.

Most of our next shoots are in the fall...would love to share more often but we're in a bit of a photography drought 'til August.

Thanks a lot Brian. Those folks were all about the fun. I tried some goofy poses because they would have climbed a tree if I asked. People like John & Marianne make this job great.

The latest we shot ... the bride was very pale which made it tough to color correct

Now that I think about it, I never color correct much of anything. Just light temperture as I shoot everything raw at a fixed 5000k. On friday I booked my top package then learned later she's Irish (paste white) and he's from the Carribean (midnight black). She's wearing a dark maroon gown and he's wearing an 'eggshell' tux. I never feel pressure shooting weddings but this one might have a little extra adrenaline added.Laugh Even the bride's Father told me every single snapshot he's ever taken of them doesn't show the groom at all (dark face clips of course). He also said to not jump off a bridge if they all turn out with the groom too darkLaugh, which I thought was pretty cool of him to say considering how much money he's spending. Takes some pressure off. I'm just going to shoot natural light as much as possible and bracket at high speed. Five frames per second with a 3-frame bracket requires about half a second to make, so it might even be possible to make HDR images and blow them all away. Should be a great challenge in any case.

trying to find a good balance without overusing PS effects

Unless the look you strive to cultivate is a sort of 'Canon 30D look'Tongue then don't feel ashamed to use photoshop on your images. It's absolutely no different than processing/printing film. Push pull, burn dodge, embellishment, other techniques like switch processes, editing w/exacto-knive, etc. I never feel 'guilty' for ps manipulation because I know how much of it goes in darkrooms. Now, the liquify tool doesn't count. That's just cheating (but I use it anyhow) Laugh

We struggle with too much magenta (usually on men's faces) not sure why.

If you're having to adjust tint in camera raw frequently then maybe getting your camera profiled would help, then load the icc profile into ACR. A raw file contains absolutely zero color information. The ACR software is responsible for adding the proper colors to your image, and I think a custom profile would help this critical process. I'm not sure if you're running your color managment properly though, which would be required to take advantage of a custom camera profile. These photos seem to not have a color space embedded? (e.g. sRBG or aRGB).

I like all your pictures you have up especially the first couple. My gawd what a beautiful girl she is; she's exactly my type. AnywaysLaugh, my favs are the 2nd and the last one. THe first one is really nice too but it looks like he's holding her a bit too tight. I'd like to see the exact same picture with him using his far arm as primary support and the close arm resting on her hip with elbow bent, or just hanging at his side. And opening his shoulders up 2-3 inches more. If the bokeh is authentic on the first and last ones that's one gorgeous lens you have there! They're too small to tell for sure, but the depth of field on a couple of them seems surreal.

And I can't forget: thanks for sharing them!Smile

Yes. I used xcopy i:\_DS*.nef d:\NEF-RAW\weddings\jmbeardmore\*.* /v to offload the card. The /v forces a verify, therefore they were copyrighted.Laugh

sorry. super lame joke.

Wow now that's a challange. Sounds like you have a good game plan.

bokey was somewhat authentic but not entirely. We shot from a good distance ,,, maybe 100 ft but then also enhanced it in PS. I painted everthing on the same plane as the couple (pillars, leaves and gates) to give it that 3D look. The blurred areas is a Kabuta action (Deep Forest)

...the pose kinda looks uncomfortable,

That was my exact thought when I saw that picture. She's definitelly bent out out shape...

Pictures are very cool.
Loved the very last shot but the only thing I would change would be to get rid of the flare since it seems to be the only visible spot.

Thanks for sharing Darren.

Thanks muchly, Marcin! Smile Glad to hear you liked them. I grappled with the idea of removing the flare, then my friend dropped in with a case of pints and I forgot to do it.Blush

Re: [videogeek] Engagement Pictures [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks a bunch for your comments S! Smile I usually only sign 8x10 or larger when on archival matte like velvet or ultrasmooth rag. Never glossy or luster. I'll print the image a bit smaller so there's approx 1/2" to 1" border before the matte starts, and sign in the white border area with archival ink.

Thanks again!

Darren
