Engagement shoot ... with a cat? Can't Post

Here's our shoot from Sunday. I encourage couples to incoporate personal elements, and we shot at the college campus where the couple met. I also mentioned she could bring any props she might want to incorporate. For example, groom is a football coach - thought maybe they might bring a ball and throw it around or something. But no, they brought a cat. Sly Who-da-thought.

THAT was hard. Cats don't really, well, cooperate. But we managed to get some interesting shots. Some of the images were a little softer than I had realized - saw more when zoomed in while editing - even though I tried to be careful to shoot at higher shutter speeds. Sigh. But thankfully there were some great keeper-shots.

Maybe I should elaborate:
As always I'm looking for feedback. One thing I'm wondering is - do the images appear washed out on your monitor? Bride looks 'hot' in many of the images but groom has shadows. I know a reflector would have helped, but I'm in the camp that prefers to shoot the moments rather than the technically perfect image, so I hate to put the camera down to start screwing with accessories. But in the future, I think I should, at least for one main portrait - have Brian hold the reflector under them to alleviate those shadows, especially with deep set eyes like this groom has.

One thing I'm learning - watch placement of body parts. When shooting 'portraits' - take the time to scan the scene - for example, look for 'phantom hands' which appear on the other side of objects - in several of these shots the groom put his arm around the bride, but only the tips of his fingers appear around her waste. I think it would look better if none of his hand was showing - I read about this. And again, it's one of those things I forget to consider, until I get home and look at the images.

Of course, it's different when shooting 'photojournalism' style - you get what you get - the action is the focus. But I have to remind myself with 'portraits', i have to pay closer attention to aesthetics.

Regarding the grooms phantom hands, I think I know what image you are talking about. I would just clone his fingers right out of that shot. Take 2 seconds in photoshop.
I like the images overall. I think they are better than the last set. Would still like to see the images a tad larger, at least 600 horizontal pixels across.
I also notice a little compression on the images. Are you using CS2 to create the gallery? Are you having it automatically resize the images for you? I have found I get much better results if I resize and sharpen the images to the correct size first and turn off the option when it creates the gallery. I found it to not to a very good job at resizing.

Are you shooting raw? It seems like the white balance is shifting around alot. I try and process the white balance the same for a similiar series, it may not be correct, but at least it's consistent.

Did you use any fill flash on these? It may have helped abit with the Racoon eyes as well.

Anyways, I hope some part of this rambling makes sense and will help. Crazy

At what point do you apply Neat Image and do you use a specific preset?
Right now we're shooting in raw and I have the 'filter and sharpen' preset from Neat Image as an action that I apply after I convert the files from PSD or TIFF down to Jpeg. Not sure if this is the best workflow.
Is it best to apply Neat Image first? I don't believe the standalone can be used because they're raw files.

Jenn

I thought your pictures looked great!
I'll let the experts make techincal recommendations, that's beyond me. :)

I also had a shoot this week which involved a cat. It was family portraits and "Milo" came along for a portrait too.

Hi Jeff,

thanks for the feedback, as always.

Brian has been trying to figure out how to incorporate the noise reduction software into our workflow. Also, you're instructions on the web images are HUGELY appreciated as he tried that out and it made a noticable difference, so thanks!!!!

We are shooting raw. The white balance is shifting probably b/c I've playing with settings and trying to warm them up or make them match. Problem was Brian was shooting AWB while I was shooting shade or cloudy. I like the warmer images, but I noticed that with changing lighting conditions, my images were either oversaturated or too yellow, so I'm trying to decide what's best. I recall you mentioning you shoot AWB and adjust in post. We have callibrated the monitor but my problem is, depending on what time of the day I look at them, they look different, with the light changing, or just with my mood, I suppose. Tongue

One thing I REALLY have to work on is to not change my settings too frequently while shooting so that editing will be much easier b/c I can copy and paste any adjustments. I've been bad at that.

I set wb at 6300k in the camera and leave it there for outside, then adjust things in PS to taste in post if necessary (I'm with you, I like warmer skin tones too). Doesn't really matter tho. Just correct one image the way you want it in the raw plugin, then using Bridge right click the thumb and select 'Copy Camera Raw Settings'. Then select all the others in the sequence and right click and select 'Paste Camera Raw Settings'. Voila, they all have the same temperature no matter what you shot at (and whatever else you altered using the plugin too, such as vignetting, ev values, saturation, or whever checkboxes you checked).

Sure is. I keep my distance when a cat looks like that.

Ha ha,

Well, you have to give the cat some credit - he was dragged out to the park and put up with it all for an hour while we did family photos then got plunked on a stump for a picture. There was probably a squirrel running past or something.

My cat would have clawed his way from my arms before I even got him in the cat carrier.

Years ago I shot at the bride's house/apartment in Jersey City and the pet was a Pot Bellied Pig.
Go figure........
