FYI - Adobe announces release of Lightroom 1.0 Can't Post

Adobe announced that they are releasing Lightroom 1.0 on Feb 17th for $199 (the price goes up to $299 on April 30). The beta version will expire on Feb 28.

I have been using Lightroom beta now for several months and plan to stay with it. While Aparture has better image management, it ran too slowly on my G5 Mac to be considered.

As there is only a 1 1/2 week window between the release date and the expiration of the beta, beta users will have to order soon.

I've recently been getting into Aperture more. I love it! How does it compare to Lightroom (performance on your machine aside)?

Glen - I tried Apple's 30 day trial of Aperture. While I was impressed with it's file managment capabilities, the performance issue was unacceptable. My system is a dual 1.8 Ghz G5 with 1.5 GB of ram. Not too bad, but the video card only has 64 MB on it. I know that Aperture uses the video card for a lot of it's processing and I believe that is where the bottleneck was. When editing raw files I would often get the spinning beach ball for extended (30 seconds or more) periods when attempting to make adjustments.

As you have a Mac Pro, you are probably not having those issues. As I said, Aperture has better file management than Lightroom (at least beta 4). Version 1.0 will add a history palatte which will bring it closer. Lightroom saves its processing information in xmp files instead of a propriatary database. Xmp is an xml language for photo manipulation and is open source. The disadvantage is if you loose the xmp sidecar file that is associated with your image, you loose all the adjustments that you made.

Both Lightroom and Aperture have excellent raw processing. I would give the edge to Lightroom (disregarding the performance issues) for flexibility and ease of use. When it comes to actually processing images, Lightroom is a pleasure to work with. It seems that I can really zip through my photos using Lightroom. The raw processor is the essentially same one that Adobe will including with Photoshop CS3. I don't care for Aperture's Loupe. It seems clumsy to use compared to Lightroom which allows you to enlarge the entire image to 100% by just clicking on the image in the Develop module.

I don't think that you can go wrong with either program. One thing in Lightrooms's favor is that it is cross-platform and from what I hear, the disc comes with both Mac and Windows versions. I have ordered a copy of Lightroom 1.0 and should be getting it in about three weeks when it is released.

I am hoping to invest in a Mac Pro later this year. When I do, I might give Aperture another try.

Alan- Aperture uses XML to store adjustments as well. As you create adjustments it creates different "Versions" of the original file. I also love the "Stacking" feature where it can AUTOMATICALLY group images based on the length of time between shots. In other words if you burst your shots you can set it up so each burst is grouped together!

I'll show you all the features of Aperture at the next GPVA meeting on my MBP!

Re: [Alan R] FYI - Adobe announces release of Lightroom 1.0 [In reply to] Can't Post

UPDATE: Alan I just worked with my first really big project in Aperture. It was about 5,000 images- the performance went down the drain. My computer was very sluggish the ENTIRE 5 hours I was working on the project. I checked Activity Monitor and Aperture was taking up almost a gig of ram and using up the majority of CPU threads. This was constant...it thrashed constantly- it never let up. At times I walked away from the project and it continued. When closing it I was greeted by the "Warning: Still Building Photo Previews" ...even after 5 hours. Totally unacceptable.

I love Aperture but it's performance with large projects is appauling. I'm gonna give Light Room a shot. If that chokes it's ACDSee Pro on the PC for me! That program kicks major a$$ and has performance off the charts. ALWAYS fast and snappy. Never lags the machine.

PS This was on a Mac Book Pro with 2 gigs of ram.

I saw that problem too, but with only a few hundred photos.

That is how I felt after trying out Aperture. I loved many of it's features, but was very disappointed with the performance.I really wanted it to work, but I couldn't justify buying it, as Lightrom runs quite fast on my machine. BTW, Lightroom 1.0 will have stacks and versioning, two features that were missing from the beta.

Is there a demo-version of the live version just released? I'd like to try it out- or am I forced to download the beta which won't match up in all aspects to the actual retail version?

Yes, if you go to the Lightroom page, there is a 30 day trial. I didn't download it (I have the full version on the way), but it should be version 1.0, as that has been released.

Hey Alan ... does Lightroom allow you to do color correction
(such as saturation, hue, brightness)? Does it let you
do dodging and burning? Do you really even need
Photoshop if you have Lightroom?

Color correction yes, dodging and burning no. Obviously Adobe doesn't want to hurt Photoshop sales, so they don't allow you to do everything, but 90% of the common things that photographers do can be done in Lightroom.

Does Photoshop Elements do dodging and burning?

I don't use Photoshop Elements but I did look at copy that I have. It does have the dodge and burn tool.

Hi, Alan.

Happened across this review of Lightroom, along
with a screenshot:

http://www.popphoto.com/...hotoshop-killer.html

They ask "Is it the Photoshop Killer?" Anyone going to

be giving up Photoshop for this?

No one is going give up Photoshop for Lightroom. While Lightroom can handle most of the routine adjustments that photographers do on a day to day basis, there are always going to be photos that need additional processing. Lightroom should be seen as the first step. If your pictures look good after adjusting them in Lightroom, fine. If not, then go to Photoshop. The real power of Lightroom (as well as Apple's Aperture), is for organizing and cataloging images. Photoshop's Bridge doesn't have anywhere near the capability of Lightroom when it comes to organizing. Photographers will be giving up Bridge for Lightroom (I already have), but not Photoshop itself.
