Finally bought a dslr Can't Post

After much researching, sampling and comparing. I picked up a Nikon D70s. Budget wise the Canon 20D was too much. Size wise, the digital rebel was too small for my hands. The D70 feels good, I like the features. I started off with a Sigma 18-200 3.5-6.3 lens. Once my skills improve I'll upgrade to a better lens. Lots of research to do on that. I'll also get an add on flash. Any lens or flash recommendations would be appreciated.

Work stuff aside, I just love seeing the world through a lens now... aren't DSLRs awesome!?!?

I can't get too specific, but I do recomend starting with a great wide angle lens. It is still my most useful for events and such. I don't know the crop factor for you, but mine is 1.6x, and I mainly use my 16-24mm wide angle.

It just seems that so many people want to start with intermediate and telephoto lenses, when they really ought to start wider. It is just more critical too me.

Sony VX2100's, iRivers, M-audio 24/96, Canon 5Ds/20Ds (and too much glass), Vegas6, PhotoShop CS3, Lightroom, etc.

No kidding...what a difference being able to actually see what you are shooting compared to a digital image. I've had the minolta dimage A1 for over a year now. I've been disappointed with the images and the user friendliness of the settings.

My first camera was the Minolta Maxxum. I bought it on the first day it was released. It was the first autofocus slr. It was a great camera and I got some good shots from it. That was.....wow.... a long time ago...guess that makes me an old guy Wink

I really like the feel of the D70s. I feel like I"m going back to elementary school though. I've been completely focusing on video for the last five years. Lots of learning to do Unsure

At least we get the chance during video shoots to watch other photgrapher's techniques. I have drawn from their techniques to and incorporate them into my own. It is really a great vantage point....

A Nikon F4 was the camera I learned on, and loved. But I think the digital SLR grass seemed greener for me in the canon fields. No biggie, we both like grass and graze as neighbors...

BTW, the photog here that I most respect/admire uses a fine-pix with his Nikon lenses. Maybe you could check there too, though I didn't note the model.

I highly recommend the SB-800 (or SB-600) Speedlight; Nikon makes the best flashes, IMO.

Nikon D50, SB-600, Nikkor 18-55, Tamron 28-75

I checked out the 800 the other day. Looks like a solid choice. Now all I need is the cash. Wink

I always feel that I never have the time to watch the photographer's
technique; I'm always either grabbing some quick shots of their
photo session (with my attention focused on the shots as to what
would look good on video) or I'm busy setting up or breaking down
equipment while they're doing their shoots. Can't say that I've ever
stood and watched a photographer work because there's always
something more pressing to do for the video side. Maybe sometime
if I'm just a guest at a wedding.

I agree, it's go go go...and if there is down time, rest the feet for the long evening ahead.

Is there any difference between the two except for range?

Just picked up the SB-800. Very nice. Comes with some nice accessories too. The bounce hood, tripod bracket, color filters and add on battery pack.

Re: [Mark C] Finally bought a dslr [In reply to] Can't Post

A biggie is that the 800 can work as a master, when doing a multiple flash shoot. The 600 only works as a slave(receiver). For a camera like my Nikon D50, I would have to use the 800 for a multi flash shoot because my little D50 doesn't send a signal for the flash like it's big brother the D70.

I don't have the manual in front of me so I'm probably not using the correct terminology...Crazy

I've got the 600 and so far I like it... but hey I'm just a video guy what would I know? Tongue

Brack, do you shoot alone?

I always sold more of the two-camera videography, and found free moments during many things....

I'm not monitoring for 5-10 minutes, just glimpsing here and there. Poses and detail they use, how they manage people (get them in good/happy moods), etc...

My favorite photogs put the subjects in positions of movement. Ex. Tossing the best man in the air, having the bride and mades skip through the grass like fairies, even having the maids begin stripping the groom unexpectedly. The joy and surprise is and looks genuine that way.... they are having fun!
