First Wedding pics from my 20D and Tamron 28-75 lens Can't Post

After having just received the lens the day before I decided to bring along my Canon 20D and get some shots yesterday. When I arrived there and introduced myself to the photog she immediately asked what I had there and I explained that it was my new 20D that I was going to use for DVD menu backgrounds and cover art for the cases. She noticed the lens right away and said that was a very good lens and that she shoots with some Tamron lenses also and loves them (thanks for the tips guys). She told me that I had the nicest camera there as she was shooting with 10D's. This wedding had at least 7 people with their digital SLR cameras (family and friends and they all were clammoring over my 20DBlush I let two of them have a go with it when I was busy shooting video and ended up filling up my 1GB flash card. I really enjoyed it and realize I have a lot to learn if I ever want to shoot in manual mode as the photog adjusted it for me so I could shoot without the flash and still get a good image but I guess I move too much when I soot because many of the images were blurred so I switched back to auto mode for now.

Tell me that this bride does not look like Kelly Ripa from Live with Regis? I hope you enjoy.

Nice images, the Tamron 28-75 is a great lens for the money.

Thanks Toogy. One thing that one of the bridesmaids told me is that I need a bigger flash as I was only using the onboard flash having just gotten the camera and having run out of funds doing so. My next purchase will be the 580EX flash and then later a longer lens.

Good idea, I am using a 580EX and it is great.
A decent telephoto lens is the Canon 70-200 F4L, awesome outdoor lens. Wish I could afford the 70-200 F2.8 IS, but I can't Unsure

With photography you're going to get people who are knowlegable about the gear. I don't really imagine too many bridesmaids asking about my Frezzi light. Pro-sumer DSLR's like the Canon Rebel and 20d are becoming mainstream and more and more guests are going to be showing up at weddings with them. Seeing how quickly you were able to start taking quality images I imagine the pro wedding photographers are going to become weary of their futures. Frankly I see video as a better investment if you have the wear with all. I don't think I've ever seen a guest show up at a wedding with anything nicer than a Canon Optura.

Nice images. Are you planning on editing them? With some time in photoshop I think you could really have some nice shots.

Thanks for the compliment Amphora. Well I probably will play with them just a touch but for my purposes only as I was not hired to "be the photog" so to speak. I'm going to burn a CD of the images and give a copy to the brides friend who is a graphic designer and amatuer photog and sung in the wedding along with the grooms brother who is also a amatuer photog. They were so thrilled to get to play with my 20D that I told them that when I'm busy shooting video if they want to, they can shoot with my 20D and so that is how my 1 gig flash was filled by the time I left! The grooms brother shoots with his own Nikon and the other girl shoots with a 10D. They had a blast and I got some great images too such as these....

So what sort of PhotoShoping would you do? I'm curious. I did post a pic in the Wedding Event forum in which I did a color pass with the flowers in PS. Perhaps a slight Gausian blur? Like I said I'll probably use these pics to show what I'm capable of and for booth decoration at shows.

I would say that the fairly basic level of editing (in wedding photography) would be not only to do your standard overall exposure but to also use selections or layers to individualls brighten faces in some photos, using a slight gaussian blur with layers on the faces that are mid-close range to give it a soft focus look, using a diffuse glow or dodge/highlight tools to accentuate the lights and give more depth to the face. Then of course you have your color isolation, sepia toning with color isolation, wrinkle and blemish removal, borders, removing objects that distract, slightly bluring the background in one of many forms. They all seem to have a fairly specific purpose, or at least a case in which they really work well. If you have an excellent photo that has a great expression but the background is rather busy and distracting, sometimes a feathered Gaussian blur radial or zoom blur on a seperate layer so you can adjust the opacity can be a very nice effect. Most of the editing does not give the photo a highly edited look, it simply brings adds something a little more to each photo, and when every photo has that, it makes a very attractive package.

Here is one photo where we used the radial blur on the background to really direct the attention to the bride. We used layers to soften the face and put a slight glow on it as well. The levels and saturation were also altered. This is also a photo where the editing is slightly more obvious, but as I mentioned, in many it is not.

I seem to be having trouble getting the image inline. Do I need to type a link after uploading?

If you don't mind Storm Crow, I could do a couple minor adjustment to your first pic and post it back here so you can see what I mean, and also see if you really notice a difference or not.

Amphora, no I do not mind at all if you play with it. Do you need me to send the file to you or are you just going to work on the one posted? That is way cool what you did in that pic! Sweet!

To get the image to show up in the the post you have to have it hosted somewhere on the web. I have mine that I want to share at www.photobucket.com as it is free. Then go to your post and click in the area where you type your message and at the little tool bar just above where you are typing, on the right side you'll see a little picture frame icon. Set your cursor where you want the pic inserted (just below your message) and then click on the picture icon. Then paste in the url info that is under your picture at the photobucket web site. You'll have to get rid of the http:// stuff that will pop up here when you click on the picture icon as the photbucket url will supply that.

If you want to send me a medium resolution jpg, I can do the edit on that and email it back. You can email me directly at patrick@still-motion.ca

I think your last pic is getting closer. I would clone out the bottom corner and then try the blur. You might also want to consider doing a feathered slection of the face and either using brightness/contract or levels or brighten it up a bit. It can take a picture that has a great subject and framing and really add that zing to it. The edited picture you just posted, with a little more work, would attract many brides attention much more than the unedited one.

Sure, I think it is a great pic as is, so it is good to see what the editing can do.
