Flash options for D70? Can't Post

Wanting to get a wired flash or remote control flash for this camera.

What are my options and what are the advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks as I love photography but am clueless about lighting.

I will soon be doing an outside engagement shoot (free) just to try my hand at it. Would that require a flash? Like my love stories, I like shooting during magic hour before sunset.

I have 2 lenses: a nikon 1.4 50mm and a nikon (2.4?) zoom lens (forget what range it is) that came with the camera as a set.

Thanks for any insight into these questions!

Corey

With the Nikon line.... I would assume the sb-600 or sb-800.

I've got the D50 & sb-600 and the flash is great for fill.

Both camera & flash have long battery life.. it's all about the staying power Wink

Hi WCorey.

Like rodovideo mentioned, the SB600 and SB800 are the top of the line flashes for Nikon cameras right now. I have a D50 and recently picked up the SB800 and so far have been more than happy with it. Though like with all flashes it takes some time to learn to use them correctly. :P

I think in your case, you might benefit from having the flash just in case, as you might have enough lighth already, or to push those shadows when it gets darker. Set it to TTL (through the lens) BL (fill flash, default), and you should be fine. If you notice slight under exposure (especially if you move indoors), then switch to regular TTL.

Also, if you are shooting outdoors, you might want to pick up one of those Lumiquest deflectors so you can bounce the flash and create a much more diffused light source.

If you have the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens, then you probably won't even need a flash at all. That lens is super fast. I'm thinking of picking it up, or maybe the cheaper f/1.8 one (I'm on a budget hehe). But then of course you are restricted to 50mm and I heard it produces a softer image as well.

If the zoom lens came with your camera, then it's probably the Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5. That's one I have as well. I'm almost always using the flash with that.

Hope this helps! I'm new to photography myself, so have been reading all about flash, etc. lately. :)
