Good reading.... Can't Post

Some great articles on this website I came across on Google...no registration required. These guys are serious business Sly....not just a bunch of cheap wedding photographers preaching their own homegrown business methodology on a forum. If you have some time to kill, definitely worth some reading, and find some stuff you can apply to your own photo/video business...

Words of wisdom worth reposting from that site:

1. Learn to say no. It is key in any negotiation. People want what they can't have.

2. Believe in the value of your work. If you don't, no one else will either.

3. The level you go into an agency situation at is the level at which you will stay. If you do a job for a small amount of money and think you will be rewarded with a bigger job the next time around, guess again. When there's a big job to hand out, a big guy gets it.

4. Market yourself and always use a good designer. (somehow I don't think she's referring to blogs here Angelic)

5. Hire a consultant. They really can make a difference. But do your research - there are pretenders among us.

6. If you are stuck in a poverty mentality get unstuck. I know that is easier said than done but this will only keep you down. This is a fear driven business - please try not to buy into any more fears than you positively have to.

And #7 on Late Night's Top 7 List....

7. This is a business. Don't try to make everybody like you. Make better images. That way you can walk away with a sense of accomplishment and more money.

That's funny. That article was the first to strike me, and I was going to print that list out, poster size, and hang it on my wall. Laugh

That's why I can't wait to get a day job, to make it easier to stand my ground when it comes to putting a value on my work. As a full time wedding videographer, in a business where the average bride DOES have a budget of $999, I CAN'T hold my ground when it comes to pricing if I want to make it day-to-day, and consequently have the "poverty mentality" beat into my head.

I can't wait until I can delete my wedding video website. Today, I spent another day sitting in the parking lot of the post office 20 minutes trying to calm down, because once again, nobody could explain to me why my P.O.Box mail is being blocked, and that I'd have to come AGAIN Monday. All, because the only wedding video payment I've got in over 2 months...a measly $500, was lost. $500 was the 50% balance of one of many $999 full blown wedding packages I booked this year out of desparation. Fuggin' homeless people knocking on my windows at every intersection in town are clearing more money than me...and they get to drink all day.Sly This has really turned out to a loser of a business, and an awefully unhealthy way to try and scrape out a living.

If I ever get into the photo business part-time, I'm gonna spend my day job money to follow those 7 rules, hiring professionals as needed. I don't care if I only book one paying job in the next 10 years, at least I'll take pride in the fact that I didn't bend over and take it up the arse from the client, even if I'm working at a major loss from paying all those professionals to help me run a real business. I don't care about the profit, since I'll pay my bills either way, I'm just sick of running an Uncle Charlie, DIY, weekend warrior, FrontPage website, keep up with the Jones gear purchasing competition, butt-of-the-joke, phony business I've been running for the past 5 years.

I just blocked out my video calander for all dates after Aug. 2007...no more weddings...and it was a good feeling. Cool It's like going cold turkey off a drug that just makes you feel like sh*t all the time. Laugh

One of the best, most concise articles I've read on the topic in a loooong time. It's absolutely dead-on. That writer has 'been there done that', fo-real. They don't teach that stuff in school.

Unlike most people who fail in business (because of their lack of can-do confidence, which affects negotiating skills) most wedding videogs are f-n screwed no matter what mindset they manage to muster. The market is just too soft in most areas, period. I'm happy for those that make it (wish I could have too) and there seems to be quite a few, but of course they're all concentrated on VU so it seems like more than there really is.

So hopefully you don't jones too bad; no floppy fish on the floor over the new calendar Laugh The 12-step program is going to work dude! Laugh

Oh and btw, hanging those words on the wall is not a bad idea (seriously). New internal mission statement, sorta. I've already printed mine out.
