How do I Capture images shot in RAW w/DigitalPhotoProfessional 1.6? Can't Post

I'm beginning to play with (or wanting too) images shot in RAW just to see how much more control you have over the images or post. I've shot some pictures with my 20D but for the life of me cannot figure out how to capture them in to my computer using the software that came with the 20D Digital Photo Professional ver.1.6 . Help Please!

You can either use your camera or a card reader and transfer them to your hard drive. From there you just open DPP and select the proper folder.

When I try to do this only the photo's shot in .jpg show up? The pictures shot in RAW do not show up at all? Does the camera have to be set in the RAW mode for the RAW photos to show up?

dumb question, but are you sure you are capturing raw files? There is a setting on the camera that will enable it to capture a jpeg and a raw file at the same time. by default, it will only save the pictures as jpeg.

If this setting is correct, the software should import both the jpeg and raw files. Have you looked in the folder where the pictures are located? the raw file should be there along side thejpegs but you cannot open them directly. You must use your software.

Do you by chance have Photoshop CS2??? That will read the RAW images.

What is the naming convention for raw files captured with this camera?

Ok....so let's start with this:

Can you see the images (pull them up) on the camera to verify that they are there?

If so, then plug your memory card in a memory card reader. Can you see the files by just browsing the folder on your computer?

If so, then copy them to your computer.

Once they are there, you should be able to pull them up in your software. Make sure that the file types that the software is looking for does not just include "images" because that file extension is not a standard "image" extension. Select "all files" in the view if it has that option.

This may be stating the obvious, but I haven't worked with that particular setup.

Thanks Postal Boy! For whatever reason when I try to read directly from the camera the pictures do not show up but when I stick the card in the Lexar Media card reader they do show up. My computer freaks out a little because it just keeps on detecting that drive and assigning another letter to it but I was able to pull the pictures on to my hard drive. Thanks for your help. Hopefully I'll be getting CS2 soon!Wink

DPP also has an update ... I believe it's now up to 2.01 or something like that.

Is it just those files that freak out? Or is it the card? I noticed that my card reader won't pick up any files shot with my father-in-laws camera although it can see all others when it is plugged into my laptop. But the files pull up on my other computer - same OS and everything. Difference is that my regular PC is USB and my laptop is USB 2 - but I can still partially read the card. Not sure what the deal is with it, but my laptop doesn't even see them. There was also some information about my card reader having trouble with cards over 512mb, but it did fine with smaller cards.

Is it just those files that freak out? Just those files. They are not recognized unless I use the card reader. Fromt he camera they are not showing up. I just updated the software that came withthe camera so I'll have to try reading fromt eh camera again and see. Or is it the card? The card seems to be working fine. It's a 1 gig SanDisk UltraII.
