How many GB's? Can't Post

Just curious how many GB's you would normally fill up for a typical wedding day/photo shoot?
Right now I have 5 gb, but am wondering what is the "safe" zone?

hey, you seem really well versed in this stuff...any idea where I can find an album online where I can create a generic shot list for album designing?

I shoot in RAW and have 18 gigs available. It's very typical for us (my daughter assists me) to come back with as many as 1600 files.

On my desk right now I have 2 - 4 gig cards, 2 - 2 gig cards and 2 - 1 gig cards and they're not totally full. Hopefully we'll never need the rest of the cards, but I have them just in case.

My last wedding we did a load of formals. Bride and groom apologized all day because it was the grooms mother that asked for them. Between the church and reception site we shot well over 50 different groupings ... WELL over. Pirate

Hey Sparky,

Do you find you need to have shot them all in raw? Do you often go back and change settings?

Thanks

I take 10 GB with me, thats 3 2GB cards & 1 4GB Macro drive, which i save until the end, just in case I "drop" it.

I could definitely use more. I shoot in fine JPEG, so I can get about 700+ images on each 2 GB card. I rarely get to my 4 GB macro drive.

Chrissy, it really depends on your photo shooting style.

My brother shot weddings for years before digital. He was trained to be more conservative in his approach to film use, and still is even with digital. I am instead much more "wasteful" --I take 4 or five frames of group shots when one would usually do (at least get one with all eyes open), I shoot blind while reaching the cameras hi and low, and I don't hesitate to "burst" during action sequences (I mean a quick 25 frames sometimes).

Brother would take 300-450 shots at a wedding day --I take 3000 to 5000 (with assistant shooting some too). So consider your expected number of shots, the quantity your card can hold (card size, file type and size) and leave a safe buffer. The biggest factor here is whether you shoot RAW or JPEG --which really should be determined by the end use. OK, thats another discussion.

Do be very safe regarding memory though. Check that you have enough space before key events --especially Procession and Recession. Take more than you could use....

Personally, I started out with 10G (10x 1GB cards) which was good for a Canon 20D shooting in FineJPEG mode. I also had and used an OTG portable hard drive (recommended here by Daremo I think) to dump to...
Now, I go well past that due to bigger file sizes from better cameras.

I'll never run out of card space so there's really no need for me to go between RAW and jpg. If I could nail every exposure then it might be different ... but I like the lattitude of working with RAW images. I just don't see me ever changing.

I do shoot in burst mode at different times, so I have a lot of shots that are close but not the same. But it's amazing what shooting in burst mode can provide. I'll even shoot in burst mode for the first kiss at the altar.

Like someone said ... just comes down to your style.

The JPEG advantage isn't just due to CF card space...

The biggest deal is your post-processing time. When dealing with several thousand images, it can add up to big time differences.
