How many pics will a 2GB media card hold w/20D? Can't Post

Well i have a choice....buy another VX2100 or buy a Canon 20D. My common sense is telling me to get another VX2100 but I really, really want a 20D and I can get one right now for $1379 after the $100 rebate. I'm going on vacation (first one in years) to St. Simons Island Georgia soon and we will be heading up to Savanna and thought it would be real cool to get some great pictures and then I can also start offering Photography to those in want. What are the good brands of media cards and how many pics will fit on each? I know nothing about still phtography but know the 20D is a great camera that I can grow with. Also, for the $1379 price you get the 18-55 lens, I know I've heard it bashed but it's got to be better than just getting the camera body and then not being able to use it!

How many pictures depends on how you have the camera set. I don't shoot in RAW as those files are huge and it doesn't provide that much benefit in my opinion. I shoot in JPG LARGE which is the top setting for 8.3 megapixel. Then it has a combination jpg and raw which really takes up space. Plus each JPG will be different depending on the scene. You can expect about 250 or so pictures on a 1gig card thus about 500 on a 2 gig card with your setting at JPG LARGE. I want the 8.3 megapixel so I can have the largest size print if I want it but it reality it's overkill. You could increase the JPG compression to make the files smaller.

I don't know all that much about the differences in the CF cards other than the size and speed. It seems like everyone makes one. However, in my opinion it's the most important part of the camera, a bad card could mean lost pictures.

I like the Sandisk Extreme. It is rated to work at more extreme temperatures such as -13 degrees as opposed to some that are rated at 32 degrees on the low side. The Extreme is also rated to take more abuse. Of course, the camera would probably not be able to take as much abuse as the card and I don't plan on abusing either but I feel better having something with higher ratings.

I've learned don't buy the best (unless you can really afford it) but don't buy the cheapest, find a good inbetween. So I have two of the 1 gig Sandisk Extreme CF cards for my 20D. Be sure to format it with the camera and not let your PC or MAC format it. I always format it instead of erase it. I've heard that's the best practice.

My first solo wedding is coming up in a few weeks, but I've been shooting with another pro to get some experience. The 20D was my choice and just received a second one in the mail today from B&H.

I do shoot on RAW settings. It used to be it was very akward and slow using RAW ... at least a few years ago when I had a 10D. These days there are a great number of programs that make it easy to work with RAW and it's not nearly as slow. Also, Digital Photo Professional - DPP - comes with the 20D. That's all I've used so far to edit my RAW files.

I'm just using standard 1 gig Sandisks for right now, which gives a little over 100 images. I admit that I'm not totally up to date on all th CF cards, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

I guess if you're going into the photo business then the 20D is the better choice ... between that and a 2100. Those memory sticks just won't cut it. Cool

Thanks for the replies guys....My conscience told me to hold off on the 20D for right now just in case and to probably get another video camera instead. This may all change soon but it really depends on some other things happening. Sounds like when I do get the 20D I'll go ahead and get one or two, 2GB cards for the 20D.
