Hurricane IKE and "We're Open" Can't Post

Photo taken the day after IKE in Pattison, Texas 45 miles west of the major destruction and eye of the Hurricane. This is my favorite BBQ joint, too.

I heard there are at least 300 people missing, with most presumed dead.

I just don't get the mentality of the folks that said they'd die if that's what it meant to stay. This wasn't foreign troops invading their land, but simply a mean storm. All it would've taken is a drive north of Houston. That's it.

Yeah, it is likely now that when future storms approach the Gulf coast of the US, particularly Texas and Louisiana, people are going to split town and get out of dodge. I expect that Galveston once re-built will evacuate several times each hurricane season from now on.

Found this old thread and wanted to give an update.
Today, they've officially called off the search for Ike victims.

Five victims are currently unidentified; it is unclear from this story if there are more missing.
