Yeah the new 40D looks nice. Though it's back-ordered at B&H. I just bought my gf her first DSLR today for Christmas. I picked up a Canon 350D for under a little over 4 bananas w/ kit lens. Gosh I hope she doesn't read these boards.

I am more of a Nikon Fan since they have such interchangeability with their lens.

Just got it (well, 2 weeks ago) I love the 40D, great camera. I didn't get the kit lens, though. I bought a tamaran 28-70/2.8 that someone else on the VU recommended.

Nikon D300. I have the D200 and love it. The D300 is an even better camera.

Dan,

Being that you shoot with a letus I think it is safe to say you appreciate good depth in your imagery. I would definitely recommend any kit lens, they might be good for the first 2 hours while you learn the cam but they are so limiting. I would think you would be better off to grab a 40D and then a used 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8. You won't have the versatility of a kit lens, but you can shoot in low light situations and will have the potential to get really stunning imagery.

At a Canon event we played with the Mark 3 1DS and the 40D and it is really surprising how good the cheap prosumer cam is compared to the Mark 3- definitely a good buy.

If you plan to get more into photo, I would switch all your glass to Nikon now so you can use them with your letus and the dSLR (unless the new letus does canon EOS lenses?). I use the Canon EOS lenses on the 5D as well as the brevis and it make sit much easier to spend $1-2k on one kick ass lens when you can use it for multiple things.
