You can see some of the damage I've been doing w/ my new SLR. I'm driving the doggies nuts. Oh, and I think one of the shots I took for the DVD cover from this past weekend's wedding is in there, too.

Lots of playing around w/ shutter and apeture and lighting.

That's funny...you're as bad as me. When I got a DSLR, all I have are thousands of pictures of my cats...99.9% of which I've deleted. Laugh

There's a good example at the end of your pics, where you're trying to get the dog running, where some practice would help in getting an image. The shutter was set to 1/25 and 1/30 at f22. You bump the shutter speed way up to like 1/500, and open the aperture, and freeze the doggy in mid air. I have a tough time with these...I can see where it would take some practice to be a sports photographer! I'm surprised I've never got my butt whipped from trying to take pictures of passing cars out front, or arrested by the Gestapo for taking pictures of the MetroRail as it passes by dowtown. Laugh

Something else I'm noticing...while I do lots of dutch angles in my video, they crooked shots in photography look odd to me. I don't notice it in my own stuff...it's easier to see it by looking at other peoples stuff with a new perspective. If the horizon is not perfectly straight, or doorframes/windowframes are perfectly vertical, it doesn't look right to me.

So how long before we burn the retinas out on our pets, from repeated flashes?Cool

both my dog and son learnt in the first day that they could spoil every shot by spotting the focus light and blinking to anticipate the flash. I had to think up new ways to trick them and catch them with their eyes open Laugh

Laugh That is 1 PO'd dog. Better not leave your gear lying around or he will use it as a toilet or chew-toy Laugh

Hi Jenn,
What lenses did you wind up going with?

Thanks for looking...
I had a ton of fast shutter speeds of them running - here's a few
I just thought the slow shutter looked different... I was going for an 'effect' TongueTongue

On another note - I think I tend to under-expose b/c I don't like that washed out look - but I'm losing detail. Also, it doesn't help that we have a black pug- everything on him looks under-exposed. He's just a black blob. Sometimes we can't tell which end is up. Sly

Yeah, at a certain point the pug had this look on his face like, "NO more pictures. Pleeeeease, no more pictures..."

Pay back for all the treasure he's left behind.

For practice, I started with the Canon 24-70mm.
This week I'm ordering the whopping Canon 70-200 2.8 IS and possibly a wide. But I can't decide between the Canon 16-35mm and the Tamron 17-35. Other than $900, I wonder if I'll really notice a difference...

Hi Jenn - those are fun pictures!

Are you able to try and return the lens if so try the less expensive lens and see if it suits you, chances are unless it is a poor quality, which that brand should be ok, most won't notice a difference.

I bought a book "magic lantern guide' which you can get specific to your camera. It has some hints and tips that the manual doesn't cover.
There is a tip for setting the white balance to cloud cover and the colour temperature to 6000K. I tried this on a portrait vs auto wb and the one I set was much warmer with her eyes and hair had more 'life' to them. Give it a try.

One other thing I noticed is that you don't even need a light meter with the cannon 20d and you'll get a perfect exposure. To do this put the camera in AV mode then point in the same line as the light goes (you're beside the light source) - zoom in to the highlights on the subject's face and hold the button half way down to focus and note the readings.. say 125 @ 5.6 then put the camera into M and set 125 @ f8 and you will have a perfectly exposed picture every time, without using the auto functions or the nasty flash (of course receptions or back light situations will differ but for most of the shots we took they looked great without it). We metered and tested various situations and all were perfectly exposed.

THe other thing I didn't do and this is really stupid when I think about it, but at the risk of sounding like an idiot I'll post as maybe there's another person out there who didn't think about this. But for focusing with the auto focus feature zoom in first and hold the button half way down to focus then CONTINUE to hold the button down until you find your shot then complete the press. I know this makes sense but I was stupidly just firing away until I figured it out.

There's my canon tips for the day.

:)

HI Jenn
I saw something about it in the magic lantern book. Do you need to know about it? I have a client meeting tonight but will take my book to the studio and read up on it and can respond to you later.

It seems as though it does the same thing as the way Ive been metering, just a different way of doing it. Thanks for the tip :)

If you haven't got the magic lantern book it might be worth the $20, it is an easy read.

Here's a few from my camera...

Tomorrow I'm going on a wedding shoot with the photographer I've been training with. Hopefully I'll be able to do some good tests and try some fun stuff. I had to stop myself today from going to buy a nicer lens for tomorrow.
