Images from Yesterday Can't Post

Well yesterday I pulled double duty for the first time. I was originally hired to shoot the Videography but then something came up with the family member who was going to do the pictures for them and so the groom asked me if I would do it also. I informed him that I would be working alone that day and that at some points we would have to make a choice of either video or pictures (processional because there was no room to set up a tripod in this tiny little church). He told me that if anything is to suffer he wants it to be the photo side and we were set. Here are some images straight from the camera with no PP.

Mike R.

The dance recital I shot last may.... the instructor asked me if I was available for the 2006 date but I am booked for a wedding in Florida that weekend... well I guess the parents loved the dvds so much that the instructor is going to change/move the date to the week prior to my Florida shoot. She also said that she wasn't pleased with the photographers that they have been getting, so I told her that I was willing to do that as well.... I think I might be getting the photos also... 130 dancers Cool

Thanks Mike. I'll play with them some and work some magic. With this being my very first "I'm the Photographer" wedding I learned alot. The one thing that really, really stands out is that there is much more pre-planning with still photography as opposed to video. With video (at least my style) I try to stay candid and unobtrusive but with photo you have to be more involved and directive at least to the couple and their guests during formals. I had fun but I'm sure it would have been even more fun had I just been doing one or the other and not BOTH! Yes the church was very small. I would have loved to be able to get a tripod up front bu there was just no way. Good luck with that dance recital.... Wink

Well thats something I really need to learn to a much higher degree, color balancing. For the indoor shots I mostly shot with the camera in auto and a 580 flash. But sometimes that was just too hot so I would switch to manual and dial down the ISO to get a warmer look. I still need to learn how to play with shutter speed and aperture settings. Then I try to learn how to pull the flash settings in to all that. So much to learn.

I really like the way that cake picture came out temperature and color wise.... just right imo.

I agree. I loved the color and the shot.

I just picked up my first digital slr and hope to start offering still packages down the road. I have lots to learn and hope you keep posting your shots and experiences. I find with event video there is less to worry about with exposure. I shoot at a shutter speed of 60 then adjust the aperture accordingly. There is a lot less direction to give as well. I pretty well capture the day as it happens. I've enjoyed doing the love stories where I have complete control over the shots and settings. I plan to start incorporating stills into the love stories. Who knows, if I get some good shots, the couple may be interested in purchasing them.

I'm not sure how much slow mo you use but you might consider trying to at the very least shoot at 90 for a shutter speed. If the lighting is real good I shoot at 500 so that the slow mo is super smooth. Just a thought. I used to shoot at 60 but found that many times when I wanted to use some reall slow mo the edges did not look very good.Wink Don't worry I'll keep posting as I'm here to learn and share just like most everyone else.

Just to clarify ... are you using it on Auto or on Program? The reason I ask is that some people say auto when they really mean program.

If you were on auto I would suggest taking some test shots on Program mode. I know of a few photographers that shoot as much as 80% on P mode and one in particular that shoots 100%.

What you'll need to do is watch your ISO settings when moving inside and out. Progam is sometime snubbed at by "professional" photographers ... but there's a lot to be said about it as you're learning the camera.

Personally, I either shoot in AV mode (aperture) or Program.

Wow..that's a crazy job to cover both ends! Great job Storm!!

You may need some more experience with shutter and aperture, but you totally nailed the shot of them cutting the cake!! I wouldn't even do anything in PS to it! I love the angle in it too. Definitely makes it feel dynamic!

Great stuff!!! Keep it up!

Thanks Jefferson! that means a lot coming from you. Your right in that I do need to learn a lot more about shutter speed and aperture because the only thing I have been adjusting is the ISO's and I'm told that will only make it grainier. Any tips?
