Is there a good solution to dump CF cards to HD while shooting in the field? Can't Post

We're getting ready to take our first family vacation in August and I'd like to find a way to dump our 2 x 1GB CF cards from our Canon Digital Rebel to a portable storage device. I had thought iPod but I haven't found a good solution to do that in a reasonable amount of time without killing the battery.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My ideal scenario is that we are dumping one 1GB CF card to portable storage while shooting on the other. When that one gets full, we just switch em.

Epson P-3000. Awesome unit. Probably overkill for your application, but it's what I use and can vouch for its performance.

You could spend $500 on the Epson P-3000, or you could spend $300 on a 16gb Sandisk Extreme III CF card, and never have to remove it until you're safely home from your vacation. Just hope your camera doesn't get stolen on the trip home. Laugh When I went of vacation, I didn't even put a dent in my 4gb card.

Yes I considered going that route also (back when the chips were $500) but ultimately decided the features of the portable media device (P-3000 in particular) were too great to ignore. It negates the need to haul a notebook around, in my application. No more notebook for me. Big plus just that alone, plus the obvious backup benefits as well as a nice little audio/video photo montage that it can produce. Just plug it in to a tv and click go on a folder and it puts out a cool, customizable slideshow set to your MP3 playlist tunes. The LCD screen is amazing too. Can render the Adobe RGB color space which is cool...I happen to shoot aRGB.

That thing would be pretty cool for showing off your pictures as you're taking them...especially on vacation. Lugging around a laptop just for offloading pics and doing "field" slideshows is a PITA. I brought my laptop on my cruise for that, but never bothered turning it on...who the heck wants to screw with a heavy laptop just for that.

When everyone in your family vacation crew is asking to see the pics on your camera, and the only way to show them is pass the camera around the room, it only takes one time without the lens cap on to realize what a bad idea this is. Laugh

I found a P-2000 @ a Circuit City for $190 and thought that I had found "the ticket" for dumping my vacation pic on....
They found the thing in their back room and were trying to get it out of their inventory... they didn't know much about it so we did some quick research on the net and found that it DID read Nikon RAW (.nef) files. However, we didn't read enough to find out that since it is an older model, it didn't read cards larger then 1GIG. (there is a firmware update to correct that...) and it can't read files bigger then 8mb... (no firmware update for that however...) I had my camera in my car and found out that it couldn't read my 2GIG SD card, so back to the store it went.... so we ended up on vacation with my laptop and that's how I dumped my pictures. I did pick up a GPS unit and a projector while shopping, and the GPS was GREAT while on vacation... and the projector has be fun for viewing the pictures and videos from vacation...

This is me after hiking in Zion with my "loaded" Targus backpack
LOADED = 2 ltr hydration water pack, Nikon D80, Sony Handycam D8, and some snacks... my almost 10 lb Toshiba laptop stayed in the rental car, I would not have made it out of the park if I had to carry that thing around. Pirate

If you have an iPod, you might want to look into this as an alternative:

this lets you transfer your photos from your camera to your ipod.
