Just recovered from first photo/video combo wedding Can't Post

It was insane...Crazy It was fun, but it was insane!

They were on a tight schedule and chose to shoot the formals with the bridal party first, then the families after the ceremony. I had the order all planned out, but I didn't plan on the bride being 2 hours late from the salon! Needless to say, we didn't have time for any of the formals beforehand.

The rain forced the ceremony indoors onto the dance floor. No room to maneuver. As soon as the ceremony started it was non-stop. Only 20 minutes for formals between the ceremony and reception. We shot all the guests, sponsors, and family members in the time we had. I think it was a good move because it was easier to gather the bridal party after the reception for photos. This is the first time my legs have been sore after a wedding. Video is definitely easier than photography the day of the wedding, but I think the post-production for photography will be eaiser than video.

My regular assistant and I shot both photo and video, but I hired another assistant just to shoot video. I used 4 video cameras just in case. I don't think the video suffered. Photography is much different, but we did learn that if this was as bad as it gets, we can definitely do both. If the bride had been on time, and if it wasn't raining, it would have been much easier. It was kinda weird having the coordinator, DJ and bride listen to me.

I'll post photos the next week or so, it looks like they came out ok.

>>>FINALLY<<<

(we optimized them for the photo lab so some of the colors might look a little funky)

Since this was our first wedding, comments would be greatly appreciated!

Great shots, Darryl. Composition was fresh and the shots were well exposed. The photos told a great story. Would you mind sharing with us what equipment you used for the day?

Very well done Darryl, your B&G must be thrilled. Excellent exposure, classy composition and shot choices, and very nice use of DOF.
Perfecto.

Thanks for the compliments. I found it is much harder to tell a story with photos vs. video. Why people still pass on videography is boggling.

Equipment: I shot with a Canon 1D MkII, assistant had a 20D. I was going to shoot the formals with my medium format, but I forgot the film in the refrigerator. Shocked We have a lot of "L" lenses except for my 28-135 IS which I used most of the day. Great lens despite being a "consumer" lens. The IS helped tremendously.

thanks matt! most of the shallow DOF shots were done with the 70-200 f2.8 IS.

Yep! That's my man D. Good taste in Photographic equipment if I don't say so myself! Wink I'm doing a few photogigs as a second shooter this season. Hopefully I'll pick up more as the year progresses. I'd like to be doing more photo than video in 2 years time. Btw, great job man!

about 80% of the photographers I've come across use canon. they really have the digital stuff down. now if they can improve that 8fps to say maybe around 30fps...

Less work in post-production and seemingly more potential for profit. Maybe that's beceause I'm slow as a snail editing though.

I just did a portrait shoot yesterday and made $100 for 30 minutes of work. I've never shot a gig with video and made $200 /hr.

I love videography as I do photography- I wouldn't feel too bad doing more photography than videography because I'll still get a chance to work creatively. Which is, incidently, the most important thing to me.

If I have my way I'll be phasing out wedding videography, but will maintain a videography business (or hobby, I should say). Point is ... I like video when I'm I'm working with stage productions, but I've gotten to the point after 15 years where wedding video has just lost its appeal.

I'm fickle though ... in 3 months I could come back with a renewed intrest!

Truth is that video (movie making) is a better story telling medium than photography. I never quite got into the idea that photography works as a story telling medium at all. When I view a photograph it's an abstract, non-linear experience. Like a painting. A great photograph or painting will allow one to write their own stories based on their own personal experiences. Whereas when I view a movie it succeeds when it takes me along a linear path and manipulates my attention...just like a good story does. If my mind starts wandering (an abstraction) then the the story fails. There are exceptions of course such as experimental or documentary films. One could also argue that there is no such thing as a wedding movie but only wedding documentaries.

For me at least, most wedding photographs are basically still lifes, like a bowl of fruit. Fine for filling up wall space but boring nonetheless.

Awesome.
I love the colors and the exposure. Did you use pole flash? Great composition and interesting perspective. The dress shot on the bed... ahhh, not so much, but it's a minor shot - no big loss.

Loved them. Congrats on a job well done!

thanks for the post jenn!

we just used regular flashes and bounced them off the low ceiling. one tip when using flash: shoot in manual mode!

we didn't, but fortunately we shot everything in raw.
