Learned a VALUBALE time saving lesson! Can't Post

ok - just to state this
" I am SOOO sick of learning lessons.. I just want everything to work right without trying!"

That said..
I am reading a great book about wedding photography as a business called
Digital Wedding Photography: Capturing Beautiful Memories [Paperback]
By: Glen Johnson (Author)
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

anyway - I am only about 1/4 of the way through.. and let me tell you.. I shoulda read it all first.. I would have saved alot of time just in this simple step...

I shot a wedding with a good friend of mine back on June 30 - and am just getting around to editing..
Well.. one great techinique talked about in the book to rename all of the photos is to use the date and time information of the photo to put them in order.. then renumber/name...

WELL>>> one bit of advise I should have thought about ... ( that is ALSO MENTIONED IN THE BOOK.. ) is to set our cameras to the same time... ARGH!

anyway - my other shooter is from another time zone.. so we are like an hour off... not sure what I am going to do to renumber!... BUT Lesson learned!

**TIP: MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN SYNCH TIMEWISE WITH YOUR OTHER SHOOTERS BEFORE YOU START TO SHOOT!

I've heard this tip before. The way I heard it is ... the photog has
two cams and the night before the wedding he syncs them up
as close as possible - to within seconds of each other. Then
when it comes to the editing he can mix the shots into the
same folder and then "arrange by date and time".

P.S. I'm used to going through the time syncing because
I always do this with the video cameras.

No .... I don't use this for synch. It's just so I know what time
it is when I'm looking at the footage. Also, I right on the tapes
later what time it was at the start of the tape. For example,
I've got 5 tapes I shot and I see the start times are 12:01
2:35 4:22 7:30 8:45 -- I use this to put them in the
order they were taken, which helps because I don't
label the tapes ahead of time. I label the tapes after the
event is over.

huh... that's interesting...

i always lable my tapes ahead... the "usual" i guess.. t1, t2, or c2t1, c2t2 etc.. BUT i also started putting the phone number of my biz on the labels.. I almost lost a tape once.. good enough scare to make me put my number on them now! i like the time idea though...

Re: [videogeek] Learned a VALUBALE time saving lesson! [In reply to] Can't Post

This is such a great tip - thanks! I was orgainzing in folders preps, ceremony, etc. When going from 3 different cameras with cards that had been formatted I often had 3 files the same number, it was most annoying. I suppose if I re-number them this way I could avoid that by putting each camera's files into a different folder, renaming by time, then renaming again?

Is it hard to re-name by camera time, I can't imagine how to do that.

In the book.. they had a photo organizer/viewer called acdsee.com ..

AWESOME.. let's you rename ( by many different methods including date/time!)
has a great editing tool... ( easier than photshop)
you can download a trial for 30 days!

I put my phone number on the cf cards I use in the still cam,
along with the word "Reward".

Someone here recommended putting orange fluorescent
tape on the card as well, so that you can spot it
easily if it falls on the ground in dim lighting - haven't
done this yet, though.

I plan to try it in DPP. You mix all the files from the
different cam's into one folder. Then ...

1. Edit > Select All

2. View > Sort > Shooting Date/Time

3. Batch Process > New File Name

DPP works with RAW and JPEGs. Haven't actually tried
it but I think that's how it would go.

Thanks Brackish!
I'll try that tonight.

I've heard of acdsee as well, think it is fairly popular as it is mentioned in a couple of my photography books.

3. Batch Process > New File Name

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Shadow.

Okay, Okay ...

I may have found a better/proper way to go about the renaming
in DPP. Haven't tried it yet but:

You mix all the files from the two cams into the same
folder and then ...

1. Edit > Select All

2. Tools > Start Rename tool

3. In the top 3 boxes select "Sequence Number"/"Shooting Date Time"/"Original File Name" [What my step 3 is doing is setting the NEW file naming sequence.]

4. Under Basic Settings check the box Sort by "Shooting Date/Time"

5. Under Format Settings select "Month Day Year" for the top

box and "Month Day Year Hour Minute Second" for the lower box

6. Check the box "insert underbar"

7. Hit "Execute"

I think one problem with the first way I showed you

is that it would involve processing/rendering the RAW

files [I shoot RAW] to all jpegs or tiffs or whatever

to do the re-name. I believe this new way I found

is just a file re-name involving no processing.

Plus, it shows you the before and after names of

each file and I can see that it is sorting by

date and time - it includes the date and time of the

shot in the file name as well as the original file name

AND it is re-naming the files 0001, 0002, etc.

If anyone would like to discuss this further let me

know ... or share your results if it works! Smile

You're welcome, Shadow.

Well, I tried the re-naming this new way and it seems to work!

There were 50 files that I re-named and it took about 1 second
to complete! And the results seem to be permanent
because I closed and then re-opened DPP and all the files
had the new names.

Here's a sample result that I got:

OLD FILE NAME: IMG_3769.CR2

(CR2 is the extension for RAW but yours would be .JPEG I presume)

NEW FILE NAME: 0001_07-29-2007-15-07-53_IMG_3769.CR2

The "0001" is the sequence number. The file taken the soonest
after 0001 in time is 0002, and so on. (I've heard you can
synchronize still cams to within 10 seconds of each other - I
do this with my video cams to within 10 seconds.)

The "07-29-2007" is the month day and year the pic was taken.
(I'm not sure how you do dates by you but you can set it
to do day month and year, I believe.)

The "15-07-53" is military time for the pic taken at 3:07 pm and
53 seconds.

And then the "IMG_3769" tells the original file name that
it used to be. (I make a DVD backup right away of the
files before I do anything to them so I'm glad there
is some reference to the original file - not sure this reference
will ever come in handy but for now I'm glad it's there.

Hi, S.

Not sure what brand of cam you use but if you're using
Canon I just wanted you to see that the Canon DPP
software does re-naming, as I have confirmed above.

It does the re-naming without rendering or changing
the file in any way except for the re-name.

There are a lot of great tools out there. I have Photo Mechanic and all I use it for is ingesting the files, renumbering and doing a quick edit in/edit out.

I just checked some of the jpegs I shot. It would be ".JPG".
