Lets talk about photo processing Can't Post

Do you do it yourself? Do you send them out to a lab? If so, what format? How big are the files? What colorspace? What is taken into consideration when you send the pictures out for proofs and for printing?

Re: [szerangue] Lets talk about photo processing [In reply to] Can't Post

I use 2 consumer labs that I can ftp to and put prints into a pro section for customers to preview and purchase straight away. I don't use print proofs. The colourspace depends on the labs. I work in adobe rgb and convert near the end of the workflow if needed, usually to srgb. Neither of them use printer profiles. Perversely, I can get Costco's profile without asking Crazy. I haven't bothered with pro level printers yet because kodak have done a great job of matching what I see on my monitor. You could soft-proof at home if you knew the lab's printer profile. I send out my files at the finshed size because I don't want the lab resizing.

When you say you send out your files at the finished size, do you mean like 5x7 or pixel size?

The dimensions, say 18"x12", at 300ppi resolution. I prefer to work at full size of the finished print so that I know there are no artifacts being introduced in my workflow. It is hard on my pc but at actual pixel view, I can be sure that there are no obvious faults before I send it out like noise or similar.

so you would sent them the original file at its original size, say 18x12, maybe 2mb - 3mb in file size, then tell them you need an 8x10 print, or 5x7 or whatever?

I do a different file for each size but I don't offer that many sizes. The smallest out of an album is 10"x8". I am going after the wall-hanging market so it is worth my while to do it that way. Plus I do a different crop for the 10x8 compared to the posters.

As I am focused on album sales, and leave the printing to Pictage. I actually started using Pictage with a free three month deal and found it worked very well to collaborate with the brides (we can clearly communicate albu revisions as "remove image 123 and put in 223").

Admittedly, the images are seldom ordered (just enough to cover the Pictage cost) --but not a surprise as I deliver images on disk after album is ordered.

First get your screen color calibrated with something like a Spyder 2.

2nd, have Costco make the prints. The use the same print system as Pictage.
You can even upload the images remotely and pick them up the next day or...
have them mailed to you.

I use a Spyder 2 Pro to calibrate my monitor already. We do not have a Costco in our town, go figure. I will check out Pictage, would that be www.pictage.com ?

Yes, but they are expensive. Check out printroom.com.
Difficult to navigate until you get the hang of it.
They have teleconference classes and great step by step support.
