Lighting kit advice Can't Post

i am a videographer getting into photography. i am a total novice and i want to start doing portaits in my home against a black background.

i will be getting a 2OD later this week and i also need a light kit. i saw the ones below:

is this a good brand?

will i be able to connect these to my camera? is that what the Synch Cords are for?

I have not purchase a strobe kit yet but I have been paying attention to what most of the photographers are buying on other photography web sites. A lot of them seem to be going with lighting from alien bees. They seem to be the choice for reasonable quality on a budget. The B800 is the most recommended model for digital work. I am not familiar with the Smith Victor lighting at all so I can not comment good or bad. I am also starting in photography so there may be better posters than myself to answer this.
