More cards? Can't Post

Would you buy more CF cards or one of those little portable hard drives that downloads the info off of your card? I know they take a little while to download so someone would need a few cards anyway, but instead of purchasing a wack of cards, what about using one of those.

Anyone tried them?

I bought the last two memory cards I'll need last week and use the Epson P3000 for offloading. Awesome unit. The display is simply amazing. Supports the Adobe RGB (aRGB) color space. Wish I had one whilst doing wedding video. It makes my PD150 video resemble HD!

Personally I don't want to screw around with anything at a wedding. Cards are cheap and I store them in Think Tank's Pocket Rocket looped around my belt. I'm never separated from them the whole evening.

where are you getting your cards from? I just spent about $100 for a 2 gig Extreme III cf card - that's CAD but it's on sale so the price would be similar to US pricing.

Considering how many gigs I'd need for a wedding, I wouldn't call that cheap.

There's not much screwing around with those Epson units. Just pop the card in and press a button. I usually do this at dinner time. You can even configure it to wipe the card automatically after downloading, however that isn't something I'm comfortable with. I'm not even comfortable delegating the download task to my assistant!Smile Format it in the camera after double-checking the images are infact intact on the portable drive, myself.

I would say more cards.... what would you do if your little portabe HD desides not to work? The show must go on... so you're gonna need the cards. I wouldn't format the cards till I got back to the studio and copied the files over to multiple hard drives & burned them to a disc. For the cost of the epson media viewer/storage thingy that DarrenS mentioned, I would pick up a inexpensive(cheap just for saving images... not editing) laptop w/a card reader and save them to the laptop and maybe run a little slideshow via Lightroom...

I have 18 gigs and that's more than enough for me. I have 2-4 gigs, 2-2 gigs, and 6-1 gig.

I don't know if you need the extremes or not. I didn't even bother to do a search for cards, which are almost always on sale somewhere, I just went to New Egg and found some SanDisk Ultra II 2gig for forty-eight bucks.

I guess cheap is all relative.

eta: Just missed out on a Kingston rebate offer. After the rebate ... 4 gig Kingston cards ... $15.

Staples often has really great deals on CF cards. You have to keep watching and grab them when you can. Around the holidays, I picked up four 2G cards for less than $40 each. They are SanDisk Ultra II's.

"Really paranoid shooters could carry a seperate USB drive and backup the entire p3000 to that with one single click."

that along with the other features is pretty impressive. Just might be an option if photography picks up for me.
