My first digital album Can't Post

Starting to design my first digital album. The page will be 22 by 14 inches, so the picture below will be printed as two 11 by 14's. Have more pages but the upload picture button has suddenly vanished! Crazy

Cool! What are you using to make the album? Did you take the pictures?

A photographer friend took the pictures. I am using Photoshop CS2 to make the album. This is going to be a sample book for him. It would be so much easier if the bride had already chosen her pictures. Sifting through close to 1000 shots is VERY time consuming.

Very nice. That is what I learned, you have to limit your shots or spend days just grading them, the photog equivalent of vid capture. I am going to be predesigning all my albums because most customers have no idea about layout or what the photo will look like in the album.

I found the photos very nice, but I don't care for the second page.

I think the larger photo of the kiss stands on it's own (possibly really kick-ass in black and white with grain) and the smaller photos distract from an intimate moment.

I would consider combining the smaller photos with a few others to create a one page collage.

I think 50% of my album building time initially was just selecting the photos to use.

I now review images, organize and rank them for online uploading using Adobe Bridge. Just use the same decisiveness you must use when selecting video clips to keep/toss. Ranking is as follows:
1 star for backdrops
3-5 stars for other images (0 stars for the duds)

Once images are narrowed down, the album building is a far greater pleasure and the lay-out flows more logically without the photo-selection interuptions.

The reason they were all grouped together is that they are all shots from the first dance. Not having designed any digital albums before this, is it common to have pages with just a single picture like that kiss?

You are right about that. It has been very time consuming choosing the shots. I was thinking of coming up with some kind of worksheet for the brides to choose their favorites in each category--getting ready, first dance etc. so at least I am using the shots that are important to her.

Julie,

I think album design is truly and art form in and of its self. Likewise I think it's very subjective, so you may 99% that love it and then one old fart that thinks it could be changed. Wink

I know most people probably look at digital albums and automatically think of 4 or 5 images per page. However, if I come across one that stands on its own then I don't want others to get in way and distract from it. I realize the reason those other photos are there and its a fine concept. And if the kiss was a blah shot then I would go along with it, but in answer to your question I will use one photo for either a single page or even a double page if I like it enough.

The layout is nice and I'm sure that it'll work for him.

If YOU draft an album and show them the concept while they are still "in the moment", they are far more likely to go to print sooner.

Go for it, and start developing your own style. They can always tell you afterwards which items to change out once the basic frame-work is completely layed-out.

Think of it this way: How fast would the video get done if you waited for the b&g to decide on the clips to include??
