My last lens purchase for the year ... Can't Post

I hope!

I started out last year with the Tamron 28-75 and it's been a good lens for me. Then I added another 20D and Sigman 70-200 2.8. After all the hype about the Canon 70-200 2.8IS I sold my Sigma and spent $1600 on the Canon.

I've found that the 28-75 just isn't as wide as I would like for some of my larger formal groupings as well as tight spots ... like relatives crowding you for the cake cutting. Mad So this morning I purchased what I'm hoping will be my last lens for a while.

I'm going with the new Canon 17-55 2.8IS. That should be enough to take care of the larger groups and those tight spots. Still, it's another $1200. I could have gone with the Tamron at less than half of that, but I had the cash and figured it would hold me for quite a while.

So now between my 17-55, 28-75, and 70-200 ... I've pretty much got it covered. I'll put them all on their own bodies and leave them there. The two 20Ds will get the Canon lenses and the Digital Rebel with get the Tamron.

Money pit? What money pit? Angelic

sounds like a good selection but I am with you on the price. I pray that there isn't a lens mount change for the next 10 years so I can convince myself to spring for the nikon 200 zoom. I love that the cheaper dslrs are so affordable that each lens can have its own body Laugh

There is a warning on the B&H site that the 17-55 2.8IS is ONLY for the Digital Rebel, 20D and 30D. If someone is planning on upgrading to the Canon 5D (full frame) then this lens will not work.

I figure if I go to with the 5D or maybe someting newer next year, I'll still have at least one 20D in the bag, so it won't be a waste.

I don't follow canon much but I am wondering if full-frame isn't the equivalent of hdv - sounds good but costs too much investment for most users.

I went to Fry's in Sunnyvale yesterday (I'm here on a visit) and the 20d bodies are $999??? Since they are selling the 30d now for around $1399.

Wish I had a couple of grand for bodies right now. :(

Nice price. I'm not sure that I would pay more to upgrade to the 30D, but some say they're worth it. For myself, I'm going to wait and see what the successor to the 5D is going to be.

Also ... Sony is going to be turning up the heat with their new line-up. The bodies (as opposed to the lens) are going to have image stabalization built in. They're attracting a LOT of attention.

It is about $350 difference for the 30d from the 20d...about a 30%-35% increase in cost. That 300 bucks could buy an OK lense.

I saw the news about Sony's camera, but haven't seen anything talking about performance.

My next lens will be an Olympus 7-14mm f4.0......it's $1650....more money than I'll probably make all year. Laugh

Its slow, and doesn't have IS, but I never really intended to get into wedding photography. None of the expensive Zuiko lenses have IS, which kinda sucks, as I'm sure this is important for wedding photos.

The new Sony supposedly has IS within the camera body, which would be nice, so all your lenses wouldn't need IS. It would be nice if Olympus would do the same with their next pro body...since I've already got so much money tied up in lenses, and I know I'm gonna have to shoot some weddings to keep from getting evicted from my apartment!Laugh

The new Sony supposedly also has some kind of dust shaker in it, like Olympus does, which is apparently a pretty big advantage over Nikon and Canon.
