My personal choice would be the 70-200 f2.8 IS, but then I wake up.

I've heard very nice things about the 85 1.2. So if I won
the lottery I guess I'd give it a go. Downside is that the
auto focus is very slow.

And then there's the VUer who said here that he got talked
into buying that lens and brings it along but doesn't even
use it.

If Julie's interested she should probably speak to some of her photographer friends on the coast. She works with some great ones. They can probably be of more help than those of us on VU.

Even tho I only use one zoom (12-24) I'd have to say the 70-200 is a staple lens for many, many event photographers.

You have a great memory. I still own the 18-70 but it's on a D70s which I bought for my assistant to hang around his neck. He takes pictures when not helping me. I rarely see that gear anymore as he takes it home with him.

That VUer didn't have a problem with the optics or quality of the
of the 70-200 2.8 IS. Rather, it was the size and weight.
He was just put off by that so he ended up using a lighter
lens which had similar image quality. That lens weighs
as much as a VX2000!

VU's Glen E. posted in this forum about a similar situation
he was in. He had a large heavy Canon at one time, where
the battery grip is built in. (It was something like 1Ds Mark II.)
He liked the cam and all but sold it and went to a model
without the battery grip because the cam was so heavy
he didn't like using it because of this.

Bah, some folks are alergic to physical labor. I grew up in a scrap yard lifting things like F-150 rear ends, Caddie front clips and turbo 400 transmissions. A 10lb Nikkor 200/2 is freakin' childs play.

Maybe Glen should hit the gym and leave the nintendo alone for a whilst. Laugh J/K

Just to put the weight of the 70-200 2.8 IS in perspective: The 70-200
weighs more than the 1ds Mark II camera body that Glen sold
"because it was too heavy".

I have had the opportunity to play with one. That sucker does have some weight to it. There is a model without the IS and the speed that is much lighter and cheaper, but when you are shooting zoomed in, any shake is magnified so I would want the IS for sure. Plus I like a fast lens. Someday.........

Yeah ... shooting at F/4.0 in a dark church in the back won't do you much good. On the other hand ... I did like my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. But I must not have liked it enough as I sold it and purchased "the great white." If IS is not a consideration then I would highly recommend the Sigma.

If I were stronger, I probably could do without the IS, but my little girl arms just cannot hold a lens that heavy very steadyCrazy.

I think you've heard of Jeff Ascough, haven't you Sparky???

He was just named "One of the Top 10 Wedding Photographers

In The World" by American Photo magazine.

Ditched = stopped using. But, yea, pay no never mind to VUers.

Listen to the "great ones". Tongue

No one said it wasn't heavy.

I offered an alternate lens because it is heavy.

Nice use of selecting what you want from someone's post. (Jeff's) Maybe he "ditched it" prior to hurting himself ... but you failed to mention he has a back problem and is cutting back even on some of the smaller lens.

I'm just goofing with you, Sparky. I hope you know that. Smile

But, actually, I don't know if he ditched the lens before or
after he hurt himself.
