Rumor has it that Canon will make their announcements on
Thursday:

http://www.photographybay.com/...-dslr-on-january-24/

There is talk of a successor to the Nikon D80 and something new

from Pentax and Sony:

Anyone looking forward to see what's coming?

Canon introduces 200mm f/2.0L IS:

I could see using something like this at a ceremony.

Weight is 5.5 pounds.

Retail price of $6000 seems way too high, don't you think?

Canon announces new Rebel for April purchase, with 12 megapixels
and 3" LCD:

Anyone interested in this for a work cam?

Be interested to see how it does in low light.

Being "new" to the Dslr world (2yrs in it...) I am curious when the jumps in technology will slow down? It amazes me how fast/often new cameras come out. And the battle between Canon & Nikon is just fun to watch... it is quite the chess match.

The new Rebel sounds interesting, and my wife and I have enjoyed the earlier models for professional use. But note the switch to SD memory cards as a potential hassle for those used to using Compactflash.

Hi, Mike. I know Canon's consumer and prosumer DSLRs seem to be on an 18-months (give or take) update cycle. I think the pro models are more like every 2-3 years. I'll be checking later to see if anything comes of a rumored Nikon D90. I saw a price the other day on the D80 with kit lens that seemed to be less expensive than I thought it would be. Maybe prices have come down on the 80 since it first came out? By the way ... I see you mention doing school photography. Were you taking the senior mugshot pictures or something like that?

Hi, Kevin.

My big concern with the new Rebel will be what packing 12 megapixels
onto the imager will do to noise. I saw on one of the forums
where some guy looked at a 200 ISO new Rebel sample image
on the Japan Canon site. He commented that he could see noise
in the shadows at the 200 ISO.

By the way, Kevin, I see you sometimes mention on the forums
about offering video and photo. It sounds like this is something
your company does. Do you give them the choice of photo or
video? Or do you do the combos? Are you doing more video than
photo business at the moment? Or evenly split? Just curious.

They're crying on the Canon forums because now the
Rebel has more megapixels (12) than their 40Ds (10). Laugh

I was shooting for Interstate Studios. We/I shot elementary, middle, and high schools... and some military schools. It is the "assembly line" of photography, not much (in fact none) artistry. I am starting back with them for their spring season/shoot... the spring pictures are more casual and will have more posing involved. I hope to learn some new stuff that I can take into the wedding market.

Oh Wah! If they are crying on the Canon forums over 2 megapixels, then they don't seem to be acting like professional photographers, because if they WERE acting like professional photographers they would know that 2 megapixels on a still frame (when you get to that size) is really insignificant.

Yeah ... I wondered which forum that would be. On DWF I don't think I've heard word one about the fact it has more. The only thing some were hoping is that an upgrade to the 5D would be announced. Some people get way too hung up on crap like that.

Yeah, Postal, most of 'em aren't pros. Just a bunch of Uncle

I don't emphasize photography much but do mention it as an option when appropriate, plus I've started advertising in some photography listings to see what happens with that. I got a call yesterday from a couple who definitely wants photography and will consider videography "with whatever money is left," and that's the sort of customer I'm hoping to reach. They have a total budget which wouldn't leave much for video after hiring a separate photographer, but it's enough for me to do both and allocate resources for each accordingly. By combining the two I can provide a cost-effective solution they can't get any other way, and I make more than I would by offering just one or the other separately.

It's a lot of work to do both photography and video at a wedding and requires three people to handle effectively, but the photography piece isn't particularly difficult compared to doing video. Plus with HD cameras I could use a frame grab from the video if I missed something critical on the still cameras, but I haven't had to do that yet. To me combining the two services is a natural step with benefits for both me and my customers, especially improving coordination regarding camera placement. :-)

You just have to not worry about having the latest gear. Because no matter what, there will be something better next year. I have a Nikon D200. A few weeks ago my boss brought in his new D300. It has a lot of very nice improvements on the older model. Will I buy one? No. The D200 still takes fantastic pictures. Maybe I will get the D400 when it comes out, then again maybe not.

I see Nikon came out with a new cam: the D60. I think it's
an update to the D40. As in the D40, you can only use
lenses with the motor built into them (AF-S), which is bumming
out some folks who want to use their older (?"screw drive") lenses.

http://www.nikonusa.com/...&productNr=25438

Looks like Nikon has a few new lenses. The D60 kit 18-85 3.5-5.6 VR.

Also something like a 60mm macro and a tilt-shift lens for architecture.

So far I haven't heard of the rumored update to the D80.
