POLL: are you or aren't you Can't Post

This isn't a highly used forum, but there are a few of us who will contribute on a fairly regular basis. I'm just trying to get a feel for we are and the experience.

I don't expect a lot of participation (if any) in this poll, but thought I would ask.

  1. My business is split down the middle between photography and video.
  2. I do mostly video, but photograph weddings as well.
  3. I shoot mostly stills, but still videotape a few weddings.
  4. I have changed over to photography 100%.
  5. I don't photograph any weddings ... just ask questions to annoy others.
And I guess I'll go first.

Right now I'm sitting on number 3. I'll probably pick up a couple of weddings (video) for 2007 from strictly referrals. I don't have any video advertising out there at the moment. Not only that, but I may very well dump a couple of clients this year. One is a dance studio that I've been doing for 6 years and the other is a show choir camp that I've been doing for a VERY long time.

somewhere between 3, 4 and 5 Laugh. The more I look at it , the less business sense I see in video OR weddings. I want something with less stress and repeat custom, not killing myself for one offs that want a bargain first. The only way I can see to make weddings pay in 07 would be to become MacWeddings and I don't fancy that.

Re: [Colvin ADTR] POLL: are you or aren't you [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm currently forcing myself to edit a wedding shot the day after Thanksgiving. It's my last video of the year. I received $1900 for this one and it's just not worth it. When I think of the time I've invested in shooting and editing ... it's insane.

I'm not selling off my equipment because you never know what tomorrow will bring. But after I finish my corporate project I would like to put it all on the shelf for a while.

2006 was thirds...
1/3 Video
1/3 Photo
1/3 Photo+Video

For 2007, I have priced myself wedding video-wise such that I'll do only a few... and I get to still enjoy it. I am also limiting the photo-video combos. They are just too hectic. Instead, I am pushing (means lower pricing) to drum up a bit more photography business (about 20 events would be full).

Admittedly, I am NOT trying to fill up all the available hours with wedding coverage stuff these days. I am developing more commercial shooting which I can schedule on weekdays (all kids in school now, so I'd rather get more weekend time with them at this point).

Just another thing to make me step back ... I'm not looking to upgrade my PD 150 or VX 2000 ... or FCP 4.5 for that matter. I see no reason to continue playing the tech game.

Not a single sole has ever mentioned HD. When the day comes that consumers - brides - demand it ... then I'll have to decide I'm either in or I'm out. Right now I know which way that would go.

I guess #1 although, my wife mainly shoots photo I shoot video. We did 17 weddings this year. 4 were video only, 2 were photo only, 11 were combo...
I shot 1 wedding photo with her, and it just wasn't the thrillride video is for me. My mind is set for video. Photography was very frustrating for me. No matter the workload for videom, I really enjoy it.

I would like to be a 2, We really haven't gotten into photography yet, but have had some inquiries. We are talking to a couple next week who are interested in having us do photography in addition to video at their wedding so hopefully that will be a start.
