Photo storage Can't Post

Anyone have any ideas for safely storing digital photo's while out in the field? Some places it's not practical to carry a laptop, just too big and I just don't want to keep up with it. Of course, I could buy enough CF cards but that's also expensive at about $100 per gig.

I've read some reviews on different card readers with hard drives... Comments were about corrupted photo's after loading or some problem or another.

I'm going overseas next year and will be taking a lot of photo's and don't want to risk loosing them.

I've read some good things though about the Epson P-2000...

Any suggestions for something proven to be secure?
