Photos from wedding shoot Can't Post

Here is the link to the wedding proofs from Saturday's wedding, as mentioned in my review thread:

I figured this would be easier than uploading individual images. Any feedback welcome. Just a few notes: This bride informed me that she 'does not relax' and it shows. The venue is, ahhh, okay, but those 'flowers' on the mantle have GOT to go. I thought it went pretty well. I just hope they like the images, esp. the bride b/c she couldn't tell me enough that she 'does not take a good photo.'

Hey Jenn,
You have some very clean and very sharp pictures there. I'm a hobbyist photographer and when I get behind the camera I have difficulties and struggle constantly at the few events I had to photograph. Each one being a learning process and a vote of confidence. During the prep and some of the ceremony I viewed you had quite a few blown out shots. Mainly the dress. You had a difficult environment and I know you can overcome it the next time. Again very clean and sharp pictures you have in that bunch. Thanks for sharing and take care

Monday

See you guys later. Much love

Hi Jenn

Had a quick peek, the photos looked very nice, good selection. I loved the one of the groom's hands with the ring in black and white. It's hard to get good ilse shots of everyone isn't it? I found that too in the weddings I have done.

For the groom preps, I prefer the one where he is standing away from the wall a little bit which takes away the shadow behind him.

The cake shot with the head table in the bkgd was really nice - I also really liked the b&w of the bridal party holding up the flowers (reception).

Sounds like you had great fun doing the wedding. I'm sure more will be coming your way soon!

Hey - thanks for looking. I boosted exposure in post - (we shoot RAW). I think I may have boosted too high in many of the reception pics. W/ prep, I didn't throw enough light on the subjects to counterbalance the backlighting, so I bumped it up in post, as well, to reduce shadows and again, I think I blew out too much.

I'm going back and taking another peek at my RAW files. Just like with video, I'm forever tweaking! Or at least while I'm 'learning.'

Did they look blown out to you? How about the color? I played w/ color temp a little but they still look a bit too orangey. On my editing computer (calibrated) they are... okay. But I'm wondering if they could be cooled down a little bit more.

What software are you using? Have you tried CS3 or lightroom? You can do miracles with those apps.

the Bridge, CS2

I've been checking out Lightroom, but not sure I need more than I have now...

Looks like the white balance is better in Lightroom than the Bridge, but to be honest, I'm still learning my way around the software, so half the time I'm not sure what I'm looking at or if I missed something. Tongue

(I have a shipment of books on the way from Amazon as I type.) Smile

Re: [Jenn M] Photos from wedding shoot [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jenn

I like a high contrast look for something different, so I don't think they look overly blown out. The photos by the window are sometimes hard to do. The camera only has so much dynamic range to play with. Even though the dress is bright on the right hand side by the window my face was automatically drawn to her face, it wasn't until I took a more technical kind of look that it even crossed my mind. I don't think it is anything that your client will consider. They look really good!

I don't think they look too orangy myself. For people photos I prefer a warmer tone than a cooler tone. I thought they looked really quite nice.

Are you viewing them on a calibrated monitor?
On my editing computer, calibrated, they look great. On my other monitor is where they look blown out and orangish.

Can't wait to see them in print.

Not calibrated on this monitor, but I find that this monitor is one that looks like prints I have made. The whites looked white to me.

Which pictures in particular are you referring to here?

I'll probably bawl at your wedding. Why not? It's the most important day of your life and you chose me to record it. What an honor! I absolutely love what I do with a passion!! I have had the privilege of working with a lot of really amazing couples, many of which have become fiends since their Most Special Day.

The reception images. But I've concluded that it must be this monitor b/c like I said on my editing 'puter they look fine. We'll see what happens in the prints.

Thanks for the side by side comparison. The second image looks flat and blue. So I guess it's just my preference for a warmer image, though I have to be careful not to over-do it.

That was my impression too and is why a lot of photogs like to use a warming filter.

Jenn which process are you using to convert to b&w?

It's a BW action that Brian downloaded, I believe, from Action Central. I just tweak the curves and levels to fine tune the contrast.

Why, do they look good or bad to you?

They look a little heavy in the red channel (ie bright). Try using the channels mixer set to monochrome. I've always gotten the richest b&w conversions that way.

Hey, Mike. I looked at the reception shots on two different monitors, using the default factory calibrations, and they looked peachy - and too bright.
