Poll - gigs and raw Can't Post

I know people have talked about this scattered through a few different threads so I thought I'd put a new post to ask the following two questions:

1. How many gigs do you take to a wedding.

2. Do you shoot raw, raw for formals, or strictly large jpg?

3. What is your favourite colour?

Re: [Shadow] Poll - gigs and raw [In reply to] Can't Post

We currently have 12 cards - 4 of which are 2gigs, the rest are 1.

We take them all, for the smaller weddings we've shot so far, we came home w/ the 2 gigs filled and about 5 or 6 of the 1 gigs.

Well, I shouldn't say filled... on occasion, like before the start of the ceremony & start of the reception, I switched to a new card to be safe (didn't want to run out at a crucial time).

We shoot everything RAW for now. But in the future, I may consider jpeg for prep stuff and reception dancing/candids.

My favorite color is blue. Smile

What is the main, real-world, reason for shooting RAW? To fix white balance mistakes? Do you also make other color corrections/"enhancements", USM, cropping etc, before saving as a JPG? I don't have a real need to shoot RAW at this point, but when shooting events, it could possibly save some post time if this process could be automated as the pics are loaded into the computer.

Re: [RustyB] Poll - gigs and raw [In reply to] Can't Post

1. We probably take 8-10 cards in total, the first two being 8gb each, so probably just over 30gb in total. Some weekends we have 3 weddings, so we find having more is always better in case you don't get to back everything up or one card becomes corrupt in the middle of a shoot.

2. We shoot strictly raw. This often varies with the amount of post-production done to the photos. In general, many photographers that shoot then burn to cd will do JPG and those who may spend upwards of an hour on one shot (as we do) will shoot much more in raw as that is where you can see the advantages really come out.

3. Probably some shade of green or orange.

Rusty,

For us, shooting raw really allows our post work to be much quicke. Even if every shot was bang on for exposure and color, we would still spend 10-15 hours per wedding enhancing the shots and Raw gives us more room to do that. Raw allows you to retain more highlights, so that can also be an advantage if you have some overexposed shots and you want to pull them back in post.

We generally do color, exposure, contrast, cropping, vignetting, and some other corrections such as cruves then batch convert to tiff so we can work with layers in PS. If your looking to do a quick and easy touchup that is automated, I would make our by some good actions for PS and keep it in JPG- the process will be much faster and the quality is very similiar for that type of thing.

Those same c-boys were arguing the other day down the street as I walked up to them. They asked if I could settle their argument, and I said, sure. I said, what's the problem. They replied, you see that light above us, is it the moon or a street light? I responded to them telling them that the light is really the Sun.

I really need to curb the late nite drinking. LaughLaugh

Man, this weekend I actually have some cash for a change (sorta), and no wedding to shoot, so I could actually go out to see you guys play Friday. But, I got this darned family Carnival cruise to finally go on. I've started drinking tonight, and hope to stay blacked out until they throw me back off on the curb here downtown next week. But, later this morning after I run out of wine and break into the bottle of Malibu Rum I bought to pay the cat-sitter coming in this weekend, I'll probably put in the Moe Hansum CD and piss off the neighbors.Laugh

Re: [RustyB] Poll - gigs and raw [In reply to] Can't Post

I used to shoot mostly JPEGs. In the past, I never felt that the benefits of shooting RAW out-weighed the cost (memory and processing time).

But, lightroom processing of RAW files gives an enormous amount of image processing control for color, exposure, etc. So, with cheaper bigger cards now available, AND with adobe lightroom handling RAW far better... I am all RAW too.

Also, I must admit that I've shot the last several weddings using 8GB cards, and it is such a pleasure to NOT juggle 10 memory cards. Now, I have 1 in camera and 3 on a key-chain. I have a slew of smaller cards if I go over, but not the dozen 1GB cards I toted around all last year.
