RAW Conversion Problem Can't Post

Anyone ever experience any troubles converting from RAW to JPG? I took about 700 pics today, most converted fine, with the exception of 9 photos.

When I view them in RAW they look fine, but when I batch converted I received 9 errors (they aren't in sequence but they are around the same time, so I do have duplicates that I took 2 or 3 of a similar shot to use if needed, with the exception of 2 of those photos, I kinda need em!)

When I batch converted through digital photo professional, I received 9 errors.
Then I tried to individually convert each picture to jpg, It worked but I got this each time:

Hmm, the important part of the photo is missing. Crazy It is the best picture of the signing of the register.

I also tried to open this file in photoshop but it said it couldn't open it as it was the wrong file type (or something very similar to that message).

Anyone seen this before? Got any ideas?

Thanks
H

Giving the RAW shooting a try, huh?

I wonder what would happen if you "convert and save"
as EXIF Tiff 8bit. That's how I save most of mine instead of
jpeg. Then later I convert the tiffs to jpeg.

When you say that you are viewing them in raw.... is it a full size image or just the raw "thumbnail"?

If you can see it full size in raw, then I would try opening and saving with the oem software that came with your camera and see if it can capture&covert to jpeg through the manufactures proprietary software. If it is just the thumbnail that you are looking at the I would think your file(s) might be corrupted.

Good Luck...

Hey, Mike.

I think what she is using, Digital Photo Professional, is the oem proprietary RAW
converter software for her camera.

multitasking..... got my desktop & laptop working. At this rate, I might just convince myself that I need to purchase a new/faster computer.

I picked up a part-time/temporary job, shooting school portraits..... now I have a backlog of video work that I need to get done.
I am burning my second dvd of the day and am editing a wrestling training video.
Gotta get these out somehow... Cherry Coke & doritos.

Oh. Is that for like the annual yearbook photos? What equipment do
they have you using for that?

I've actually heard there are companies who specialize in the annual
photos and it's a tough nut to crack for a newbie entering the
market going against those who are entrenched.

Myself, I put in a long video day - left the shop at 10 a.m. and got
home around midnight.

It is Inter-State Studios....
Using Canon 20d's(I hate that little screen) with Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lense. 100iso, 200shutter, 11apt & custom White Balance, Lrg JPEG not raw. Tethered to a PC. Using a 4 light set. (Main, Fill, Back, Hair.) We shoot for elem, middle & high schools.
The work is like an assembly line.... They do the class pictures, Individual pictures, yearbooks, ID badges, Teacher pictures, Sport/Team picture, some spring casual stuff....

Sorry for Hi-jacking the post...Blush

The photogs I was working with today were using 20Ds.
My partner videog got showed one of the shots from the
photog - off the back LCD of the 20D - and my partner made the
comment to me that "the image was so small it looked like
a postage stamp".

Maybe a lot of it has to do with what you're used to.

And to further add, Mike ... I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the
20Ds. As a matter of fact, this company and their photogs are
doing a very good business with the 20Ds. You know ... when
you're mostly used to looking at the images on 2.5" screens
like what the Sony video cams offer, the 2" diagonal
screens are noticeably smaller. Must say, though ... this photog
company I worked with today that uses the 20Ds does a
hellova business!

I guess it's a good camera(and lense combo) or the company would have them.... I'm just not used to looking at such a small display.
I'm not chimping with it.... we have to write the image number from the camera onto the order form. The software was updated on their computers and no longer can we get the image number from the PC display.... we have to get it from the tiny screen. After a few hundred shots.... my over 40 eyes (and reading glasses) have trouble reading the numbers... especially 8's, 9's & 6's.

Thanks Mike and Brackish.

It was weird, I could see the file in the DPP Software - enlarge it and look at it, but when I converted those files I got the white screen.

I ended up going back to the card, re-transferring and trying again doing each individually and it worked that way.

Corrupt files - EEK! Can you imagine doing a wedding then saying "Sorry, the files were corrupt".
I guess that's when having a second camera to take an extra shot on comes in handy.

Do corrupt files happen to say an entire card?

I don't know if corrupt files = corrupt card. Not even sure if you can do anything to a card that would "recondition" it. Just curious... when you were running your batch, did you have any other operations running? Might your system resources been maxed out and your system had a "burp" during the batch processing? When you say that you enlarged it,.... was it at a high resolution? Also does the software have any cache files the might need to be purged?

Corrupt card from a wedding would be terrible.

Re: [rodovideo] RAW Conversion Problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not sure if it enlarged at high resolution, I don't think so because it basically enlarged it to just smaller than my computer screen, so it must be compressed a bit.

There is my firewall/anti-virus program running, and I might have had my e-mail open. Maybe an e-mail came through and caused the computer to think about 2 things at once. I'll be sure to close everything down next time. It's easy to max out on this computer. Frown

Thanks for the advice.

Looks like you're either running out of harddrive space or running low on memory.
Something similar happed to us in the bridge, photos started flipping sideways and moving out of order. Noticed there was less than a gig on the drive I was copying it too.
I recommend using external drives for the photos and keeping the C: drive only for applications...just like video.

Thanks Jenn

I was using an external drive but was getting errors about the laptop, it is full and old, it gives me a memory error every once in a while, I bet that was the problem.

Thanks!!

Nice to see you back here!

Probably time to run scan disk and then a defrag or format on the external drive.
If the chips give you a problem, Sandisk makes a great image recovery program that will even find stuff you weren't looking for.

This old laptop has seen better days, I suspect it is something to do with the computer and not the cf card.

I forgot about the recovery software. Thanks.
