Shootoing plans for Engagemnet Pics, Bridal Shoot and Wedding Can't Post

We've probably all had an opportunity to spy photogs at events where we shoot video. However, I have my first Bridal shoot upcoming and an engagement session soon to follow....

I really have no strategy for these shoots so I'll solicit ideas here. What would you suggest for poses and/or effects etc...

Sony VX2100's, iRivers, M-audio 24/96, Canon 5Ds/20Ds (and too much glass), Vegas6, PhotoShop CS3, Lightroom, etc.

Hmmmm,
First question, 2 1/4 or 35?
Take a look at your friends' albums to check out how the posing was done. You may even see some things that you can improve on. Sneak into a church for a wedding and play hawk on the fence post and watch the photographer do the formals after the ceremony. Pay close attention to what the priority shots are, especially if it was a long reception line and an early next mass coming up.
See how the photographer handles pressure Shocked.

Experiment (doesn't sound quite right) on willing participants for your flash coverage. Get an idea how long your batterys are going to last when going full bore. Will flash be allowed in the church during the ceremony? What fast lens with its reduced depth of field will you be using?
DON'T be one of those people that crowds the altar. Stay reasonably away. Ive always been afraid of lightning strikes. Coach them ahead of time that during the vows and ring exchange for them to face each other so you can get the shot. And when you do get the shot, back off to the side and low so everyone else can see and
that you wont be in a videographers (who are they?) viewfinder.
Lets see........what else is there....Oh, back to the flash. On 35 slr or dslr if you have the flash connected to the hot shoe, horizontal works out fine, it's just when you turn it vertical that you will create rather large side shadows. If you cant move the flash then consider cropping the horizontal. Digital reacts different than film. Film speed on a dslr is really 'gain'. Been doing film for this since the 70's. Just learning digital (a Sony DSCS70 since last summer and now a 20D) and some video now too, and I might add, from a very good teacher. Who said you cant teach an old dog new tricks. Woof.
Capitalize on anything out of the ordinary. Not suggesting closeups of cpr on one of the guests, but in my case I just shot a wedding during a snowstorm. Their goodbye shot is of them in about a foot of snow. I had to sit IN the snow on the stairs to get the shots. Have to figure out how to attach images here.
Oh, and make sure you get fed.

I appreciate your input regarding weddings. I am far more comfortable there having experienced/observed a multitude of wedding photosessions while toting a video camera.

How about ideas for engagement session and bridal shoot?

I have seen some bridal shoot samples from a variety of sources, and would like to know if there are shots considered to be "standards".

Engagement session. You mean the engagement party? Just want to make sure we have the right terminology because I know it changes depending where you are.

Ah, I see.

This is a photosession of the couple intended to yield images for their newspaper announcements and/or invitations. Usually more closeups.

The bridal session is just the bride fully dressed in wedding gown.

Generally, as a videographer we seldom attend this segment of photographic service.......

Ahhhh, newspaper shots and announcements. Gotcha.
Believe it or not that can be wide open. They can be casualy or formally dressed in a studio, home or outdoor setting. It's almost always a head shot be cause by the time it gets in the paper with the size they use and the "grain" of a newspaper image anything else will end up too small. Shoot color then covert to B&W for the paper. Unless of course the paper prints in color.

The bridal session would be full length, 3/4, and head shots. And a nice soft focus filter for the head shots, not all, can create a very nice dreamy feeling to the image. Use existing light and flash, and with existing light use some type of fill panel to fill in the shadows under the eyes. You dont want a bride that looks malnurished.
Now, if this is before the wedding
Flowers, for this could be artificial, Or just a single real rose. Take a look at the paper and see what they use. If at the wedding, do the same as above, but you"ll be under more of a time constraint.
Here, I usually do family pictures right after the main course is served, formals, if you didnt get them at the church, during the cocktail hour. But be quick and stay in command. Also a helper who can have the assignment to hold reflector panels, carry tripods, and just spot for stupid stuff that you might miss can be invaluable too.
I admire the work the video world does. You folks have to stick with the whole sequence where the photographers can just do that 125th of a second snipe, get in get out. Again experiment on someone to make sure you will be getting the effects you want and expect.
Hey you never know, you might like it. I know one member here, my mentor to this site, who had my 20D for almost a week.
