Some Pics from yesterdays Wedding to share Can't Post

Well this was my first time ever shooting at these two gardens located near me. I had heard so much about them but never have had the opportunity to visit or shoot there. Yesterday just before the ceremony it poured rain but it let up as the ceremony was starting and the light stayed flat and made the colors pop! I hope you like the pics. I'll be blowing some of them up to hang on my walls as art for sure and will be going back just to take pictures. All these pictures were taken on the fly because I was the hired Videographer.

Lovely pictures Rod! Nice location. You've got a good eye. I LOVE the one closeup of her waistline and flowers!

Thanks Lisa, very much appreciated!Blush These thumbnails don't do these pictures justice. That one that is real small... it is my new desktop background and wow! The contrast is amazing and the colors. I asked the phtog if he wanted it but he passed on the shot with the bride holding her flowers behind her. I love that shot too.

Nice photos Storm.

I have often thought about bringing my DSLR to wedding shoots, more for fun, but it would also give me some nicer shots to use for DVD cover design. My fear is that the photogs would get a little nervous about it. Have you ever had any bad reactions from photogs when you are shooting stills?

I also love the close up of the gown.

I was talking to a photog friend of mine about doing photo montages with wedding photos, and since photographers would probably not be interested in contracting this service out to me, or let their clients have the right to pay me to make montages with their pictures, I told her then I would just start doing photography myself and making the montage an add-on. She instantly got extremely defensive, thinking that I would be shooting pics alongside the "professional" photographer, and how they would not allow that. I started to tell her that I didn't suggest that I would shoot alongside a photog, but rather do all the photography myself. But, I just shut up, and left it at that...no sense in going to battle with the ego of a photographer, who are very protective of their business.

Kinda like hearing them whine about how hard a time they're having booking weddings because of all the newbie photographers, yet every wedding I go to there is a photographer there making $3000-$7000 for one day of work, because of their skill with a point-and-click DSLR. Then I'm the one that gets the call from the client for frame grabs off the video, because the photog sucked.Laugh

Bill I always go right up tot the photographer and make them aware of what my intentions are to use the camera for. I tell them I use it for the DVD art, DVD case art and for background DVD menus and such. I also telll them that the images are not for sale to the B&G or their families and friends. Now having said that, if I were to be shooting the wedding (stills) as if I were the photographer, I'd be in trouble with them for sure but I don't go crazy shooting pics. I get my very selective shots and I'm done with it. I do occasionally get a photog who is very vervous about it and when I get them I try to calm them but if I can't then I just limit my picture taking even more. So far it has worked well and they respect me for it. One even said that it was nice working with a true professional because I was not taking pictures with a little cheesy camera.

Awesome photos. AGAIN... I am curious, as a videographer making the jump to photography, how did you learn to shoot such amazing stills and learn about your camera. Books, training, or is it just trial and error. I'd like to pick up a DSLR to play around with.

All you do is increase my appetite for a nice DSLR. Great shots Storm. Do you carry your camera with you at all times? Are you being approached by photographers questioning your intentions? I bet your equipment is on the same level that what most of them carry on the job. Smile

Re: [Xray] Some Pics from yesterdays Wedding to share [In reply to] Can't Post

I think we need to be diplomatic when we use a dslr at weddings with a contracted photographer. We should explain that we are taking only limited shots and will not interrupt their work or compete for sales. Photogs are facing a lot of market shrinkage now that everyone, including all types of vendor from DJ up, has a reasonable quality camera at a wedding. The advice some photogs are giving is that they should cooperate with videogs that need cover shots and provide suitable images in return for a credit. That way both sides are happy.

Thanks okspyder! You know a photographer I just worked with a few weeks ago probably put it best.... as Videographers we are constantly shooting and so as we are shooting we probably in our minds are saying "there is a beautiful shot, there's another and another...." We get to see so many and the photog is just taking little samples of the day. I guess that might be it but for me it was out of frustration. I was getting frustrated when I would see something that would be just so awesome and go over and suggest it to the photog for us both to capture and then they would say no! The day is for the bride and groom and not for us and I just wanted to make it extra special for them. As for the training... the photog's are training me believe it or not. I mean I was shooting in auto mode but they have converted me to manual and RAW and I'll never go back. It is so much fun!

Get a nice DSLR, you will not regret it. During my slow times I am shooting senior pictures and other stuff so it is making me money that I would not have had if I did not own one. Yes I do carry it with me at all times (except during the processional). Many times when I show up my camera is better than the pros that were hired... oh well? I had one photog tell me that he respected that because it told him I was a professional.

I agree with this completely. I go right up to the photog first thing with my camera slung over my shoulder and I explain the shots I will be taking and why and where I intend to use them in the video. I have had a few that were uncomfortable with it at first but as the day went on they relaxed because they saw that i was not shooting their poses. Also if you come up with some of your own that they like... they like the fact that you have now given them something they can use in the future.

Re: [Storm Crow] Some Pics from yesterdays Wedding to share [In reply to] Can't Post

Agreed. And you know some of my closest working friends in the biz are photogs. My wedding down in Williamsburg this past weekend was a photos sister-in-law. She asked him who to hire to film her wedding and he gave her one name! The more I film the more I want to start taking my D70 and snapping off more pics. I have the same conversation with photogs about my photos and the DVD artwork. All but one in 4 years has been really cool and many offer to email me pics to use. If I use them, I give them credit on the back of the DVD cover as well and then send them a copy of the cover.

I want to move into photography as well but at the moment I am rolling out my 2nd full-time crew and as my wife keeps reminding me, I need to focus on one thing at a time. So of course I am rolling out a 2nd crew and trying to hone my SDE skills Laugh

I would love to have a second team or crew but right now am working solo for the most part. I've turned away too many weddings due to already being booked.

tee hee hee.
I shot a wedding a few months ago and the photographer who was there thought he was the cats meow. He kept telling me to make sure I wasn't in his shot (yet he thought nothing about constantly walking in front of my camera while I was filming the ceremony).
He charged a bundle for his time, after all, he is an "artiste"!
Anyway, I just talked to the bride who told me she only liked one photo from the day and they were all terrible.

Normally I would be sad for that to happen (mainly to the bride), but because this guy was annoying and rude to me for no reason I was secretly happy he had a disappointed client.
