Son in Law gives Mom concern over DVD shelf life Can't Post

Client's son in law told her that burned dvds have a short shelf life so she passed her concern to me. I did some research and found that she really has nothing to worry about if care is taken when handling and storing her dvds. But wanted to post a question here asking for opinions or facts on shelf life of burned DVDs.

She also asked about copies of dvds rather than burned dvds... not sure there is a difference here but I think I understand what she is asking.

Maybe you could do a 8gig Jump drive with the DVD folder and files (video.TS & audio.TS) on it... or heck even a small external hard drive(they are running pretty cheep $80 for a 250gig Seagate External((more then enough space), overkill actually)... and give them the Files, just in case.

That's a hard one... nothing is forever. Tapes degrade, film gets brittle, memories fade... Just use superior media and hope for the best... I guess. Make several backup dvds also.

Didn't realize I was in the Photography forum... but basically the same response... a jump drive with the files or a hard drive with the files... or how about a Ipod or Zune w/the photos on.

I provide my clients with one DVD in an Amray case and a backup in a trimpak ... telling them to keep the second one off premises in a safe deposit box.

I suggest that they make a backup each year and as technology changes that they transfer the files to the new technology ... while keeping the old.

If a relative wants a pic from their DVD the it's suggested that they burn a CD or go to a flash drive and make the prints.

Never, ever give the DVD to anyone.

I do no promise to keep or maintain copies of their weddings. Once possession has changed hands ... they're responsible.

ETA: I guess you could always ask this particular mom how she wants them delivered. OR ... is she scared of digital?
